Dem party chairman to Specter: Welcome

State Democratic Party Chairman T.J. Rooney said today that Senator Arlen Specter’s decision to switch parties is “outstanding” and that he will be welcomed by the party.

“I was incredibly pleased and heartened to speak with Senator Specter today,” Rooney told this afternoon. “I along with countless other Democrats welcome him to our party. We’re prepared to work hard on his behalf, as he’s worked hard on our behalf for so many years.”

While Rooney stopped short of saying the party would formally endorse  Specter for the Senate nomination, he said he expected the longtime moderate Republican to receive a warm welcome.

“This continues to paint a picture that there is clearly a monolithic lockstep to which Republicans need to adhere, and if you don’t there’s no place for you,” he said. “Whereas in this Democratic Party, we embrace people and candidates whose ideological stances run the gamut.

“I think that Senator Specter is going to be met with tremendous embrace by many Democrats across Pennsylvania,” Rooney added.
