Specter on seniority: ‘I’m going to get it back’

PHILADELPHIA—Senator Arlen Specter sounded confident Monday that he would eventually regain his seniority in Washington, which was stripped from him by his new party last week.

“I’m going to get it back,” he told pa2010.com with a smile after entering a crowded ballroom here for the Philadelphia Democratic City Committee’s spring dinner.

In between accepting a slew of warm welcomes, including one from Congresman Bob Brady (D-1), who is the head of the city’s Democratic Party, Specter acknowledged that the party switch has been challenging.

“There are a few bumps in the road,” he said. “But I’ve got good shock absorption.”

This is disgusting that a guy who once went hand in hand w/ GW and Rick Santorum can slimely guy and hob knob w/ guys like Bob Brady. This guy is a spineless jellyfish who is going to go down hard. I’m just not sure when, in the primary or general. The sooner the better.

He’s not going to be re-elected, much less get his seniority back, if he doesn’t alter his voting pattern. If Harry Reid, Rendell and Obama want to see Specter reelected, they should at this very minute be planning a vote on a meaningful issue where Arlen can demonstrate his Democratic bona fides.

These votes already appear to be in the works. Specter has already opened the door to voting on the public-option for healthcare. Also, it appears that a modified EFCA is being prepared that preserves the “secret ballot”. Apparently, it involves letting workers mail in their vote, like an absentee ballot, until the threshold crosses 50%.
