Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline extended
By THE OFFICE OF STATE REPRESENTATIVE BILL KORTZ
HARRISBURG, June 15 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, announced today that the deadline for eligible homeowners and renters to submit their Property Tax/Rent Rebate forms has been extended to Dec. 31.
“Residents should be sure to take advantage of this extension and file appropriately if they have not yet done so,” Kortz said. “This rebate can be a substantial help to those in need, especially in today’s troubling economic times.”
Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program forms can be filled out online or can be requested to be mailed by going to www.revenue.state.pa.us/ptrr. The maximum rebate a person can receive is $650 for homeowners and $500 for renters. Kortz said residents who would like assistance filling out the paperwork can contact his local office at 751 Pittsburgh-McKeesport Blvd., Dravosburg, or by phone at (412) 466-1940.
The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people 18 or older who have disabilities. The income limit for these Pennsylvanians is $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters, excluding half of their Social Security or railroad retirement income.
Kortz said six weeks after submitting a Property Tax/Rent Rebate application, applicants can check the status of the rebate by visiting www.papropertytaxrelief.com and clicking “Where’s my Property Tax/Rent Rebate?”
An applicant will need to enter his or her Social Security number, anticipated rebate amount and date of birth. After the six-week wait period, the site can be used to confirm claim status, rebate amount and the date a rebate is expected to be mailed or direct deposited.
Kortz said residents also may use a similar feature via phone by calling toll free 1-888-PATAXES.
The state Department of Revenue plans to begin distributing rebate checks on July 1.
