Specter, Fattah and the Senate race

Having run briefly against him in 2008, I couldn’t help pausing at the fact that Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-2) has endorsed Senator Arlen Specter, with whom he can’t agree on terribly much, for re-election. It was pretty clear that Specter wasn’t going to do much for me in that election, and in practice he didn’t do a whole lot for any Republicans that year, either. Was this part of an implicit (or explicit?) deal, with Specter always having the party flip and the consequent need for endorsements in Philadelphia in mind? I don’t know and I probably never will. But it’s consistent with the cynicism with which both Specter and Fattah, two of the most important politicians in the region, have long conducted themselves, a cynicism which has served them well but the people of the city and the region rather less so.

I’ll see you after the brief pa2010.com vacation next week.
