Toomey not counting on Specter match-up
Republican Pat Toomey told The Sentinel yesterday that he’s unsure he’ll face newly Democratic Senator Arlen Specter in the general election.
“He has a tough primary on his hands,” Toomey said. “It’s a different year, a different environment.”
A Rasmussen survey last week showed Specter leading Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) by 19 points in the primary, and Toomey losing to both Democrats in the general election.

He most certainly will not be facing Specter. Specter will be unable to command the necessary enthusiasm from grassroots activists to win the primary. You don’t win a Democratic primary from the top down. That’s not what our party is about, which I think was proven rather decisively in 2008.

Jon-
Sestak was one of those “top down” guys supporting Hillary with his “super delegate” vote and political stumping in New Hampshire as early as 2007.
The polls show Specter beating Toomey by a wider margin than Sestak, so of course Toomey would rather face Sestak.
If the polls flip with Toomey faring better against Specter, expect Toomey to change his tune and promote the assumption he will be facing Specter.
However, the overall strategy for Toomey to play them off against each other as they waste tens of millions of Dem dollars.
