Murphy endorses Pike in PA-6

Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-8) on Wednesday endorsed Doug Pike for Congress in the 6th District, giving the former Inquirer editorial writer another measure of early support as he looks to lock up the Democratic nomination early.

“We need more leaders like Doug Pike to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us in Congress, to create green jobs, to get our economy moving again and to get our fiscal house back in order,” Murphy told reporters on a conference call. “In Doug’s 14 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer, he was a thoughtful advocate for common sense solutions.”

The endorsement came a day after incumbent Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) said he wouldn’t seek reelection, opting instead of a gubernatorial run. Pike’s early financial and organizational advantages have increasingly made it seem like he will walk away with the nomination largely unopposed, a good sign for Democrats hoping to capture the seat after years of close losses to Gerlach.

In his endorsement, Murphy seemed to imply that Pike’s early entrance into the race was key.

“Doug Pike aggressively got into this race early, and I’ve literally seen him work his tail off over the last three months,” Murphy said.

Pike said he was honored to have the endorsement.

“When I get to Washington, I look forward to stading arm-in-arm with the Congressman,” he said.

State Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester) has said he will seek the GOP nomination.
