Reading mayor endorses Pike in PA-6

Reading mayor endorses Pike in PA-6

The mayor of the largest city in the 6th District endorsed Democrat Doug Pike for Congress Wednesday, in yet another sign that the former Inquirer editorial writer is marching to the party’s nomination unopposed.

Reading Mayor Tom McMahon called Pike the “right person at the right time who can help us with the change we need to get our economy moving again.”

“In Washington, Doug will actively support the interests of the people of Reading and other financially challenged Pennsylvania communities to retain and create family supporting jobs,” McMahon said in a statement.

Pike is the only Democrat to declare his candidacy to replace Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6), who is not seeking reelection in favor of a gubernatorial bid. State Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester) is also running, and other Republicans are considering the race.

Pike has already lined up the endorsement of members of Congress from neighboring districts and other party leaders.

Berks County is huge in this CD. Great to see Pike working hard up there early!

Where are the other candidates in the 6th? Doug is miles ahead.

Previous Dems opposing Gerlach didn’t put a great deal of effort into (the 6th district part of) Berks County. In fact (I believe it was Lois Murphy) beat Gerlach in the part of the 6th district lying outside Berks, but lost by enough Berks votes to lose the election. I hope this is a sign that Pike will not make that same error.

We will most likely see other Democrats get into this field. Pike has the early start, but I have my doubts.

It’s old news – this endosement is very old from the summer, in fact, when Manan Trivedi, The Reading Mayor switched his endorsement to Trivedi and pulled it from Pike. The readers should understand this. Look on Trivedi’s website and you will see the Reading Mayor, Tom McMahon, on Trivedi’s list and no longer on Pike’s list.
