Specter says he’s been consistent on ‘card-check’
In a rhetorical flourish sure to peeve his political opponents, Senator Arlen Specter says his views on the Employee Free Choice Act have been “consistent, and suggestions to the contrary by those intending to run against me are incorrect.”
Specter made the assertion in a letter to the editor published in Wednesday’s Inquirer. He was responding to a column that detailed his shifting public statements on the legislation.
Only Specter knows what his true views are, and while they may be consistent, his actions on the legislation have been anything but. An original co-sponsor of the bill, he said he wouldn’t support it earlier this spring as he faced a challenging GOP primary. After switching parties, he gradually softened his stance, and with Senate leaders working to strip the controversial “card-check” provision from the legislation, he has increasingly told labor leaders he will back an ammended version.

The original card-check with the open-ballot was opposed by a lot of conservative Dems as well. It simply wasn’t going to pass without the “secret ballot”. As for Sestak, he talks a good game about supporting card-check (which he knew couldn’t pass), but he jumped shipped early on to work on a House compromise bill that is pretty much the same as what Specter is doing on the Senate side.
It doesn’t take a warrantless wiretap to figure out that Bill George and other union leaders told Specter and Sestak exactly what level of compromise they would accept.

Consistent all right.. consistently tight rope walking.
It’s smart I guess, EFCA being such a delicate issue, but there’s no denying he’s trying to have it both ways while still supporting his long time friends in labor.

His views are consistent with whatever will get him elected. He cannot be trusted–his votes always align with whatever is expedient for his career. We don’t need politicians like that let alone Democrats. Specter can promise the moon. No way am I voting for him.

Specter could vote with the Democrats 100% of the time, Sestak people would find a reason to complaint anyways. Shame Joe will be losing his seat.

Specter is like a “pussy-willow” — he bends whichever way the wind is blowing. What a lack of principles!!

Sestak is like a sailor of old.. he goes the way the wind blows.

If we lose Sestak and get a REAL Dem like Lentz or Vitali in that seat, it will be a happy day for Dems in the 7th.

Specter has been a smart politician as evidenced by his longevity. He has many advantages going into the race against Sestak. But he must underestimate the knowledge, attention and intelligence of PA voters to try to sell his variable positions on EFCA as an example of consistency. Is he losing his politcal acumen? Is he running so scared that he has to desperately say something this easily proven to be incorrect?
Or has his solid support of Bush for 8 years made him adopt the Karl Rove political philosophy of saying anything to win an election?

Sestak appears to be the one willing to say anything to win. He’s been claiming to be a Democrat for the past 3 year, despite votes and behavior to the contrary.
