Costello declares candidacy for PA-6
Chester County Recorder of Deeds Ryan Costello officially entered the 6th District Congressional race Thursday, setting up a GOP primary battle as the party looks to hold the seat being vacated by incumbent Jim Gerlach.
Costello, former chairman of the East Vincent Township Board of Supervisors, said he was running out of concern about growing federal deficits and fiscal perils to the middle class.
“Like many of my friends and neighbors, I am deeply concerned with the direction the Democrat controlled House and Senate are taking our country,” Costello said in a statement. “In the first half of this year we witnessed skyrocketing federal spending, huge taxpayer funded corporate bailouts, and rising unemployment rates. Now Obama [a]dministration officials are raising the possibility of middle class tax increases to fund a major health care overhaul that could jeopardize our access to quality health care.”
Costello will have to get past state Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester), who has an early head start after laying the groundwork to succeed Gerlach for months. Whoever comes out of the Republican primary will likely face a strong Democratic candidate in Doug Pike, who has been marching toward his party’s nomination unopposed and has significant personal wealth to bankroll his candidacy.
Gerlach struggled to hold the seat ever since it’s creation, and after leaving the increasingly liberal district in favor of a gubernatorial run, Democrats are determined to finally capture the district, which includes parts of Chester, Montgomery and Berks counties.
“Since Congressman Gerlach announced his intention to run for Governor, I have spoken to many local residents about my concerns,” Costello said. “They agree that we need more independent voices in office, individuals who can help restore fiscal sanity to Washington, DC, individuals who can work in a bi-partisan manner, individuals who will support or oppose an issue based on its merits, not pressure from special interest groups. I will be that voice—the voice of reason—that the people of the 6th District need and deserve in Congress.”

Dan: The 6th also includes a little of Lehigh County.

The Republicans are clearly disorganized in the sixth district. Schroder and Costello (and maybe more?) are going to drain each other’s resources in the primary, making it easier for Pike to win.

I am encouraged to see young, qualified candidates are stepping up to the plate. Out with the old and in with the new.
Pike doesn’t make it past the primary.

Nick C, Buddy your crystal ball needs cleaning. It is hard to lose a primary to yourself.

I agree with Nick C. I think Dinniman jumps in and wipes the floor with Pike and his trust fund $$. Pike is way too far to the left for that seat. If Pike is the candidate in the general, the GOP wins.
Costello looks very much like a Gerlach-type Republican, who was able appeal to the GOP base while winning over Dems because of his pragmatism and independence.

I’m not giving advice, I’m just calling it like I see it. Dinniman beats Pike and his parents $$ easy.

It’s always good to see the local GOP community is so clued in on everything. And by clued in, I mean making things up that sound good in their minds. Good work Stosh.

And I love how Democrats have deluded themselves into thinking that somehow the views of the far left of their party, as exhibited by Pike, are somehow mainstream. Or that elitists, like Pike, resonate with voters. Pike would probably be the preferred Dem in the general election for the GOP. I just don’t see it happening.

Stosh – Pike is the nightmare candidate for the GOP in the general election. He will have so much momentum coming out of a primary season where Democrats are united and the GOP cannot tie their shoes without stepping on some new reactionary, right-wing ideologue: Costello, Schroder, Guy C, etc. All cut from the same cloth. All way to conservative for this moderate CD.
Why do you think Gerlach moved on? You think he will actually be Governor?!? Or did he realize he was going to lose to Pike?

if there is one candidate the republicans want, its pike. the only thinhg that makes him credible is his trust fund, which is why the dccc backed him when gerlach was still in the race. pike’s elitism will sell on the main line, but will be a flop everywhere else. frankly im surprised that the democrats havent made a bigger push to get someone else in there. there’s still plenty of time.

actually, i just checked out pike’s website and he much more credible than i thought. now i understand why Patrick Murphy got behind him so early. looks like a tough campaigner.

Think about the narrative:
Main stream media hack uses trust fund of Long Island Congressman to promote progressive policies.
It comes off as stale and elitist. At least Steve Welch in the 7th made his own cash.

As reported in the Reading Eagle today Ryan makes $175,000. Not quite middle class. So keep talking and assuming you know everyone’s finances.

You Republican flacks are hilarious. When a Republican businessperson makes money, he is “successful.” When a Democrat does it, it is a “trustfund????” WTF?
Stosh
Aug 7th, 2009
$175,000 is the salary of a Congressman, its not a reference to how much Costello makes.
And no, its a trust fund when its left to you by your parents. If you earn it all yourself, its yours. Surprised that even needs to be explained to you.

Pa Voice, why does Pike look like a tough camapigner? Because he got some beauty photos taken talking to people? Because he’s vague in all of his issue positions? Nothing there on that site leads me to believe he’s a “tough” campaigner.

Stosh, open your eyes http://www.readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=151508 it’s a profile of Ryan Costello, showing HIS ANNUAL SALARY, stop lying.
And Pike has been to numerous events and has worked hard to get numerous endorsements, seems like he is working hard to me.

Pike didn’t earn his money as a hack with the Inqy. He has a trust fund that is lending him cash for this endeavor.
Conversely, when businessmen who have built their own digs run for office, that’s a different story.

unfortunately one of pike’s young campaign staffers is stealing identities. they opted to steal my name and pretend to be me. the only post i made was the one that says pike is a total trust fund baby and the republicans are elated to run against him.

Last I checked, journalists don’t typically have the cash to drop a ton of cash on Congressional races.

You Republican flacks don’t know your left foot from your right.
According to his website, including a successful 35-year career, Pike was also chairman of the board at a hospital for ten years.
Now, I have no “inside” sources, but that sounds like someone who knows how to run a business, make money, and probably invest money. If you look at the stock market in the last 40 years (even with a recent downturn), it is easy to see how someone could make a bunch of money there.
Republican lies won’t stick with no sources and no truth.

“The Democrats have a very good chance of picking up the 6th congressional district in Pennsylvania.”
Where have we heard that line before?
In truth, Gerlach vacating the seat does, in theory, increase the likelihood of the seat (finally) going blue. However, two things to keep in mind. First, Republicans managed to hold the seat throughout very difficult political environments (particularly over the last two cycles). Whether that was a testament to Gerlach or the swing nature of the district remains to be seen. Secondly, the national environment looks to be much more friendly for Republicans next year. If Republicans clean up here (as it looks like they may), I just don’t see them dropping a district in a good year that they managed to hold over several bad years. Costello looks like the type of new, fresh face the GOP needs nationwide. However, whomever wins this seat next year, it won’t be by a higher margin than Gerlach’s performances (51%-52%).

Why go against someone with experience and create a primary battle. Costello needs a dose of humility and some experience. Pike vs the Pisher? GOP loses. Has to be Schroder to look like a race in 2010. Other than hacks who will support him?
Pike will not play well in Berks and parts of Chester County…will get interesting!

not sure why you think Pike won;t do well in Berks. It’s all about the economy and jobs in Berks and the GOP know zilch about jobs and the economy. I think Pike carries Berks strong just like Obama did.
