Specter says he’s ready to battle Sestak ‘toe-to-toe’
Continuing his escalating war of words against Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7), Senator Arlen Specter on Sunday said he didn’t want to run a negative campaign, but was prepared to do so if necessary in next year’s primary.
“Now, I don’t want to get involved in brickbats, and I’d rather talk about the issues, but if Congressman Sestak wants to go negative, I’m prepared to battle him toe to toe,” Specter said on CNN.
“When Congressman Sestak starts to throw stones, he lives in a big glass house,” Specter said. “The guy has the worst voting record in the Congress from the Pennsylvania delegation. He’s missed 104 votes this year. He talks about his military record. If he was still in the service, he would be a court martial, and he’s been AWOL, absent without leave.”
Sestak officially declared his candidacy against Specter last Tuesday.

Specter wants to talk about the issues? Game on for Sestak.
Game on.

This is a real damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t situation for Sestak. If he wants to get dirty, he’s going up against one of the toughest campaigners in Pennsylvania history. But if he sticks with the issues, he has to face a man who has forgotten more about how to help Pennsylvania than Sestak knows.
Either way it should make for pretty good television.

Every time Arlen speaks, I am convinced that he is well past the time when he should have retired.

If this fight were the other way around, where Sestak was the party’s favored candidate and Specter was the lone-wolf, then Sestak would more than have a chance.
However, we don’t live in that universe.
Specter has the money, the name recognition, and a good voting record as a Dem. His votes make headlines; Sestak’s votes don’t.
Specter can “define” Sestak, which will cost money for Sestak to reverse and define himself. There is no amount of money Sestak can spend to change people’s minds about Specter.
