Specter trots out the Democratic supporters

Specter trots out the Democratic supporters

With Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) once again basking in media attention for finally announcing his candidacy against Senator Arlen Specter, the incumbent sought Tuesday to refocus attention on the legion of Democrats supporting him.

Throughout the morning Tuesday, Specter’s campaign sent out statements from Democrats who are backing the longtime Republican, who switched parties a few months ago.

“While the Pennsylvania Democratic Party welcomes Congressman Sestak to the race, he has an uphill climb against Senator Specter, the incumbent Democrat,” the campaign quoted state party chairman T.J. Rooney as saying shortly after Sestak’s announcement. “Senator Specter is the front runner and enjoys the full support and financial commitment from President Obama, Vice President Biden, Senator Casey and Governor Rendell and thousands of rank and file Democrats.”

Later, the campaign e-mailed reporters this statement from Democratic Senatorial Campaign Commitee Chairman Robert Menendez:

“Senator Specter has emerged as a key player on the top issues that Democrats care most about right now. Whether it is bold heath care reform, Judge’s Sotomayor’s nomination, or climate change legislation, Senator Specter has proven he’s in the center of the debate, trying to get things done. Over the past few months Senator Specter has traveled Pennsylvania generating an impressive amount of rank and file support and I know he’ll continue to do so, which is why he’ll be very difficult to beat in either a primary or general election.”

Thank you Joe Sestak for bringing democracy back to the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.

More like Specter trots out tired old pols and defenders of the status quo. We elected Obama because we wanted change. Replacing Specter with someone like Sestak is part of that change.

I like T.J. Rooney. I met him once, he is a very nice man. I wouldn’t call him an ‘old pol’ either – very youthful and charming.

    Lee-
I don’t see how getting his ass kicked by an 80 year man is “Democracy”, but it sure will be entertaining.
Bill Kortz has filed, so there was already “Democracy”. Joe Torsella was already running, but he wasn’t a fool on a fool’s errand, so he stepped down. Democracy still thriving.

    Rob-
Tired old pols? You mean the party leaders, and legislators that Dems voted for? The people trying to expand our party by cutting into the ranks of the Republicans?

    Julia-
I’ve got to meet him at some point.

TJ Rooney is such a hack. When Rendell closed ranks for Hillary last year, TJ was on Hardball guaranteeing a Clinton victory in PA. I’m sure he’ll trot out the same dog and pony show at the state committee meeting next month.

A 2 term Congressman is NOT Senate material. Who in their right mind would give Sestak any money ?

What has he done for the 7th district? Nothing anyone seems to know of except collect his high salary. There is no way he will beat Senator Specter after his service for over 40 years

    Lana-
MOST of the money in Sestak’s coffers was raised for his RE-ELECTION to the 7th district. If Sestak retained any of the honor he was taught during 30 years in the military, he would give that money back, so it could be used to elect a Dem to for that seat.
Sestak spend 2008 begging for money he “needed” against a paper-tiger challenger. Sestak has BRAGGED that he didn’t spend a dime on TV and Radio ads. So, why did he take the hard-earned money from donors in 2008, if he didn’t really need it?
The obvious conclusion is that he planned to run for Senate all along and deceived the donors that put their faith in him that the money would be used to keep the 7th district in Democratic party hands.
If this were business investing, instead of politics, they’re would be jail time for such a misdirection of funds.

Though I doubt that JFK, if alive today, would be backing Arlen.

Did Joe Sestak also vote for McCain/Palin as Specter did?
