Toomey says he would vote for Sotomayor

Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey said Tuesday that he would vote to confirm President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court Justice if he were in the Senate.

His position, laid out in an op-ed in The Inquirer, aligns him with his Democratic opponents, but sets him apart from many Republicans who oppose Judge Sotomayor. It could also illustrate the fact that Toomey, who has the benefit of a Republican primary field largely to himself, can execute the traditional tack-to-the-center much earlier than most candidates.

“If I were a U.S. senator, I would vote for her confirmation, because objective qualifications should matter more than ideology in the judicial confirmation process,” Toomey wrote.

I find this suspect considering the Pat Toomey I saw in previous elections was extraordinarily far right. Granted, I understand he was trying to appeal to the ultra-conservative part of the Republican Party in an attempt to beat Sen. Specter in the primary, but this just smacks of him jumping to the center to gain moderates for the general. So the real question is, Which is the real Pat Toomey?

Which is the real Pat Toomey?

Just as the best way to see the real Barack Obama last year was to read “Dreams from My Father”, go read Pat Toomey’s book.

(I haven’t read it, but the table of contents looks promising…)
