Costello vows a positive campaign; says he won’t run against party endorsement (Updated)

PHILADELPHIA—Chester County Recorder of Deeds Ryan Costello said he won’t be attacking his opponents as he seeks the 6th District House seat, promising to run a positive, issue-based campaign.

“I’m going to try not to talk about my two opponents, because I don’t have anything bad to say about them,” Costello said recently.

And he said he would not end up running for the seat if he’s not the candidate endorsed by the county parties in the district next year.

“I will not run against the party if I’m not endorsed,” he said. “I’m a party guy.”

During a lengthy interview over lunch here, Costello repeatedly tempered positive statements about himself with caveats of “I’m not taking anything away from my opponents.” Given a chance to criticize fellow Republican Steven Welch for running in the district even though he lives in the 7th, Costello simply shrugged and said: “It’s a free country.”

“His entrance into the race makes it all the more interesting,” Costello said. “I’m going to stay positive and I’m going to be talking about issues. I don’t think we’re going to do ourselves any good by going after each other.”

Costello also faces state Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester).

UPDATE: Costello clarifies in an e-mail that he won’t run if the local parties endorse another candidate. But if the GOP apparatus officially stays out of it, keeping it a wide-open race, he says he’ll stay in.

Ridiculous statements. Ryan has an open shot to take on Welch and Schroder for obvious weaknesses and he wants to play nice. If you want to win, Ryan, you better start being aggressive. Especially with Welch, who has obvious weaknesses and cuts into the ability of Ryan to win.

    being aggressive?

Ryan has already conceded since the Welch/Meehan deal was set up by the GOP apparatus which doesn’t want and open race.

My perception is Costello spent some time working his way up the party pecking order, though not sure how high. Curt has had his differences but has been around for some time. Welch could care less could care less about the party or anything other then his newly found ambition. Seems like Costello wants to draw a distinction from the two but I dont think he has hit it hard enough yet. Nick C, better get your boy to take the gloves off, this isn’t a county row office race.
