Iraq vet poised to challenge Pike for nomination in PA-6 (Updated)
This morning, Democrat Doug Pike will finally get a challenger.
Manan Trivedi, an Iraq War veteran and primary care physician in Reading, is expected to formally announce that he is running for Congress in the 6th District. Pike had been the sole Democrat running to replace Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6), and other party insiders had passed on the race to leave the field clear for the former Inquirer editorial writer.
But Trivedi, a Berks County native born to Indian immigrants, launched a campaign Web site this morning, and a public announcement is expected shortly.
“I was raised in this district by working-class parents and experienced what many families are going through now with the loss of their jobs and their pensions,” Trivedi says on his Web site. “But I also learned the importance of serving others and working hard for things that matter. These principles have guided my career, from the battlefield to the emergency room.
“I am now prepared to serve my community in a new capacity: in the halls of Congress,” he added. “We have some big challenges facing our nation. Our healthcare system is broken, we’re engaged in two wars, and our economy continues to struggle. I know how to get things done under extremely difficult situations, and my direct experience with these challenges will give the working families in my district a strong and credible voice in Washington.”
It will be very difficult for Trivedi to seriously challenge Pike, who has been endorsed by Democratic insiders and elected officials across the district, sports a significant head start in fundraising and organization and is spending heavily on his own campaign.
But Trivedi’s entrance to the race is at least one bit of good news for Republicans who fear losing the seat as Gerlach pursues a run for governor.
UPDATE: Trivedi’s campaign e-mailed reporters to formally announce his candidacy late Tuesday morning.

This great and opens the door for the GOP to win this CD. I was getting worried the liberal Pike would run away with it.
COME ON DAN!!!!!

“This morning, Democrat Doug Pike will finally get a challenger.”
DOUG PIKE HAS NEVER BEEN ELECTED TO ANYTHING! He has an opponent in an open race!
That sentence is really bad and misleading.

It doesn’t open any doors for the GOP, everyone automatically thinks once another person enters the race votes will be filtered away. Here’s the real story, the GOP needs a pulse and this Trivedi guy seems like the type that can beat them and Pike for that matter.

The GOP is now recruiting Welch because they know none of their other flacks can beat Pike. Trivedi siphons off money in the primary but has no chance of winning primary or general.

Now that Trivedi is around Pike is a little worried. For months he had the run of the place, picking up endorsement after endorsement. Of course he got all the endorsements, he was the only candidate around.
Have you even looked at the issues of both candidates? Especially in this day and age, healthcare should be front and forward, and this is something that Trivedi is unrivaled in. I think we got a good one in Trivedi!

Thank god we have a real candidate in the race now. that’s a heck of resume. Looks like he’s someone who we can all identify with. Never reallly felt that about Pike.

It’s funny you mention healthcare as Trivedi’s strength because Pike was chairman of the board of a hospital and nursing care facility for 10 years. He knows the industry inside and out.
How is Trivedi uniquely qualified on health care again? Be serious or don’t post.
GOP's dream

This is exactly what the GOP wanted… Someone to get in the race to drain Pike’s early strength and momentum so they have a chance in the 6th.
Pike has been campaigning hard up here in Berks and already has all the political and grassroots support locked up. Trivedi has no base or backing even in his hometown… Does not look good for him.

Trivedi is a doctor, big deal. He was in the military where he had no real view of the actual health care problems. Who says that in 5 months the health care debate is behind us and suddenly he is JUST THAT Doctor. I don’t think he can be seriously in tune with all the issues in the district.

I have to say running entirely on healthcare in the 6th is weak. Especially when in after Christmas that WILL NOT be the main issue.
If you look at his education stances, they are poor. NCLB was a TERRIBLE plan, ask any teacher and they’ll tell you how it doesn’t allow for actual teaching and turns the classroom into test prep. And technical preparation? How about the sciences and math, not Vo-tech. Vo-tech will not help advances kids to become the next leaders of USA.
His plan are soft, he is running as the health care guy, big deal. He doesn’t even mention single payer.

Everyone keeps calling him THE PROGRESSIVE candidate, yet he speaks nothing of the pressing social issues of today. And doesn’t take any particularly progressive stands.
werid. THIS GUY IS PURE JOKE.

Pike is suit that’s it. Someone mentioned that Pike was the COB for hospitals and nursing, yeah, when you’re parents are loaded you get jobs like that. I don’t know who I’m voting for, but I need someone to fight for us, not some rich guy looking for something to do.
Hey Manan

Well you’re pretty much a suit too. That’s what Doctors do. Order some tests and ride around on a nice boat. Good stuff though. Seems you have really done your research on Mr. Pike. Wow, you are as out there as people in the no have said. Now you are running as a fake progressive whom will split the dems in two and lose the seat because of some weak ass stands you take. AWESOME. YOU SIR, are why the democrats always have troubles, you water everything down by holding on to one issues. Just like the GOP with religion. Don’t forget the economy is still tetering. What do you know about the economy besides your sweeet Doctor salary.

I have talked to Manan at multiple events throughout the district. He is smart, thoughtful and a very attractive candidate on the whole. He has a real shot. Why is Pike the end-all be-all anyway? I was never impressed by his speaking or fundraising skills. And why should he have a free ride? This should be a good race with the victor (I pick Trivedi) being stronger for the race in the Fall.

Reading these comments is a good thing for the 6th, but in the long run, who really cares about the 6th? You have a young doctor, war veteran vs a reporter, chairman of the board. On paper it’s a no brainer, but when you get the two in a room, you’ll see it’s a lot different. And I’ll let you see what I’m talking about. For now people need to wait and see, and stop trashing everyone.

Yeah, What does a Doctor know about Healthcare over a board chairman? Are you serious? Board chairmen see the bottom line and that’s it, a Doctor sees first hand what is going on in healthcare. To say that a doctor just orders tests and rides on a boat tells me you have a lousy doctor!
We finally have a real chance at taking this seat, and having real representation in congress from this district! GO MANAN!
