Onorato to formally declare candidacy next week

After years of laying the groundwork, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato will make his candidacy for governor a definite next Tuesday.

Onorato’s campaign manager said the day-long announcement will start with a morning event at City Hall in Philadelphia, before moving on to Harrisburg and later Pittsburgh (hat-tip to The Tribune-Review).

Onorato, a former Pittsburgh City Councilman and Allegheny County Controller, has long been seen as the Democratic front-runner by party insiders, and he sports more than $5 million in campaign cash, significantly more than any other candidate. But he faces an increasingly crowded primary field.

State Auditor General Jack Wagner, Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel and Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty are all seeking the Democratic nomination.
