Roggio endorses Trivedi in PA-6, while Pike continues to rack up establishment support
Democrat Manan Trivedi got the first endorsement of his nascent 6th District Congressional run Thursday, when last year’s candidate in the district threw his support behind the Reading doctor.
Bob Roggio, who lost to incumbent Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) by four points last November, had been considering another run in recent weeks before deciding against it. He had implied in conversations with pa2010.com that he was likely to back party front-runner Doug Pike if he didn’t run himself, but apparently was sold on Trivedi’s background.
“Through my conversations with Manan, I became fully aware that he understands this district, its needs, and how to get things done,” Roggio said in a statement released by the Trivedi campaign. “He grew up in this district and has seen what our families have gone through. He has demonstrated to me by his hard work in becoming a physician and through his service in the Iraq War that the people of the 6th district will have a tireless champion. He has dealt with the biggest issues of our time and now we need him in Congress. That is exactly why I am endorsing Manan Trivedi today.”
Roggio is hardly an establishment figure, but has enough political allies in the district that his support could force Pike into a more serious primary than the former Inquirer editorial writer had expected.
Even before Roggio’s endorsement was made public, the Pike campaign released two statements chock full of still more endorsements, including support from state Representative Thomas Caltigirone and several labor unions. Multiple members of Congress and party leaders have already backed Pike.
State Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester) and Chester County Recorder of Deeds Ryan Costello are seeking the GOP nomination to replace Gerlach, who is running for governor.

Roggio?

This hurts Trivedi more than it helps. Nobody thinks Bob ran a good race in 2008. Obama won with 58% and Roggio got 48%. Ouch.

How does this hurt? Doug Pike would have killed for this endorsement. He’s after every endorsement he can get. Telling everyone he’s got the backing of the DCCC which isn’t entirely true. The DCCC is supporting both.

Heard this was just sour grapes that the DCCC was supporting Pike so early.

The Roggio endorsement really only bring contacts and intel on the district. Maybe some volunteer lists and super vols who were loyal to Roggio.
BUT, the 7th is tough for canvassing, I know that from experience. Few areas with dense population.
It may have a bit of an impact, but it doesn’t change the key to winning the 7th: Money.

I means 6th, of course…
Yup

I think Jack is right. The 6th is a very expensive district to run in and Roggio brings no money to the table (see: 2008 campaign).

I just wanted to respond to TractorMan who seems to have his wires crossed somewhere. Congressman Patrick Murphy, who is Chair of the DCCC’s Red-to-Blue program endorsed Pike very early and has been at events supporting him — I saw him at one!
The DCCC clearly has liked what Pike is doing: campaigning hard around the District, raising money, and building a strong team.

All I can say to that is, we shall see. Murphy is an Iraq Vet, Trivedi is an Iraq vet.
Money isn’t everything, but it does help. Trivedi has hit the ground running on fundraising.

Bob has been jealous of Pike all along. He has done eveything so far that Roggio couldn’t. He has raised more money and has a stronger ground game among other things. This is weak endoresement from a nobody.

Trivedi “hit the ground running on fundraising?”
What does that even mean unless you work for him or have some type of inside information?
The only public information about his fundraising is the paltry $16K he has raised on ActBlue so far.

He might know the geography I the district but I question his knowledge of the people in the 6th. Med student and Iraq war vet great but how does that make you know what I want and need. At least Pike has been writing about these issues for years. No idea what a board of directors person of a hospitol does but I can’t imagine he didn’t get some insight into the awful affairs of the health insurance industry. At least enough to know what’s broken and that it’s time for a fix. I don’t think Trivedi can be considered the only health care candidate. Not mention this progressive label he is getting seems fake.

So obviously tractorman is manan no way would an outside observer know these details. Good work man. Always help to campaign through a political comments section.

Jack,
What campaign(s) did you canvass for in the 6th?
Isn’t the 6th spread across a few counties? What county do you think is best to canvass?
Um 6th?

6th Sense/Mr. trivedi: I would suggest not looking for field advice from anonymous commenters on websites.

Watching the President’s speech the other night only invigorated me more for Trivedi. Just watching the right sitting there with their smug grins and non-bipartisanship spirit to get the job done on healthcare. I’d take the advice on healthcare from a doctor who’s on the frontlines over a COB that meets once a week to discuss parking issues for nurses.

Flynn6th,
Sorry to disappoint you but maybe you should check your facts before slinging mud. This type of anonymous, demonstrably false, attack is typical of campaign staffers and candidates who are frustrated by their inability get what they want.
The strategy of “if I whine loud enough, someone will save me” simply does not work.
Pike seems to be: running a much more professional campaign than Trivedi, working the district harder and longer — leveraging his 22 years of strong working relationships in the region — and raising more money.
I really don’t think Trivedi has a chance.
Again, sorry to disappoint you.

Mr. Roggio does have ties to Sen. Casey, so maybe that’s something.
Also, usually the Dem. candidate is from MontCo, so maybe a Reading person would get more support from the Berks County part of the district.
Does anyone have numbers on the population breakdown in the 6th (how many voters in MontCo, Chester, Berks, Lehigh)?
maybe

I think all endorsements are overrated in the primaries with the exception of the Democratic County Committees endorsements. I don’t know Manan but from looking at his resume it wouldn’t be hard to imagine him getting Chester and Berks County endorsements. Montco I think would be more difficult but not impossible.
Money is #1 but having the grassroots committee people on your side helps, particularly in a primary.

Maybe,
To get major endorsements, you have to have a chance to win. If you don’t – like Trivedi – then you won’t get major endorsements.

I have heard Pike is already starting to lose support. Fred Sheeler apparently called Pike and asked to have his name removed as an endorser. His name no longer appears on Pike’s endorser page. That is not something you want to have happen this early.

Pike was able to get endorsements early, before Manan was able to announce his candidacy. I suspect you will see alot of Pike’s endorsements dropping off now that we have a serious reformer on the ballot. As for some of the party insiders who are in Pike’s camp, they were also on the wrong side in the 2008 Presidential primary. That should indicate just how savvy those folks are when it comes to Democratic primaries.

I do not work for Manan’s campaign. Nice try though. I am going off of public info. I love how people line up behind someone who has put $500,000 of their own money into a campaign. Since when has it been “To the highest bidder” for Congressional seats? It’s sad that it comes down to money and not substance. As long as he has good fundraising, he’ll be in it. And yes BerksWoman is correct, the party is on the wrong side of this one too.
