Specter says he’ll support EFCA
Speaking to hundreds of labor activists, Senator Arlen Specter said Tuesday that he will back the Employee Free Choice Act.
Specter has changed his mind on the legislation numerous times, originally sponsoring it, saying he wouldn’t support it as he faced a GOP primary and then reconsidering after switching parties. Since then, centrist senators have worked to strip the most controversial “card-check” provision that came to identify the bill, and it remains unclear whether than language will be in any final legislation.
But at the AFL-CIO convention in Pittsburgh, Specter said a compromise of some form would pass Congress this year, The Associated Press reports.
“We have pounded out an employees’ choice bill which will meet labor’s objectives,” Specter said.
