Former state Senator Williams endorses Trivedi

Former state Senator Connie Williams endorsed Democrat Manan Trivedi for Congress Monday, giving the Reading doctor his first high-profile party endorsement in a primary that has much of the Democratic establishment backing former Inquirer writer Doug Pike.

Williams, who opted last year not to seek reelection after more than a decade in the legislature, called Trivedi “representative of all people of in the 6th District.”

“His life experience, intellect, ability to connect with people and energy will make him a great member of Congress,” Williams said in a statement.

More than anything, Williams could prove a powerful ally in Trivedi’s fundraising efforts, as he seeks to overcome the significant financial advantage afforded to Pike by his personal wealth. Williams is independently wealthy herself. But the endorsement was also one of the first signs that Trivedi’s insider appeal extends beyond a small group allies in his Berks County base. While Montgomery County, which Williams represented, makes up a smaller share of the general election electorate, it is key to winning the Democratic primary.

Pike is still seen by most party insiders as the primary favorite after getting a head start in fundraising and campaign infrastructure, but Trivedi continues to turn heads with his early performance. Not counting Pike’s own contributions to his campaign, Trivedi almost matched the money Pike raised in the third quarter.

Trivedi received a full-on standing ovation at the Berks County Democratic Committee meeting this past Saturday, Oct. 17. He is the first candidate in a contested primary, in my memory, to receive such enthusiastic support.
