Two more GOPers eyeing Dem House seats
In yet another sign that Republicans are feeling resurgent ahead of next year’s elections, two more GOPers have stepped up to the plate this month to contest Democratic House incumbents.
Chris Paige, an attorney and hedge fund manager in Skytop, has decided to run in the 11th Congressional District, where incumbent Paul Kanjorski faces a primary challenge from Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O’Brien. And U.S. Attorney Mary Buchanan is said to be seriously considering a challenge to incumbent sophomore Jason Altmire in the 4th District.
This comes after Altmire and fellow Democratic incumbent Patrick Murphy recently got their first Republican opponents for next year.
Paige, the first Republican to formally challenge Kanjorski, said the financial bailouts had spurred his candidacy.
“The bailouts are outrageous,” he said in an interview. “I think they’re unconstitutional and they’re bad policy.”
Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, who has lost to Kanjorski twice, including last year, is still considering a run, according to Republican insiders. But Paige said he would be a better candidate.
“I think the public has decided to get rid of Kanjorski, they just saw Barletta as an unacceptable alternative,” Paige said. “Had it been someone else, we would have won last year.”
Buchanan, who The Post-Gazette reported was mulling a run against Altmire last week, would seem to be the first politically potent challenger to Altmire this cycle if she ultimately decides to run.

Buchanan can’t beat Altmire in my opinion.

The Rs are overconfident. What are they going to run on? “We stood with the insurance companies”? “We’re glad the U.S. didn’t get the Olympics”? “When the economy was about to go off a cliff, we wanted to do nothing”? If they’re worth their pay (which is questionable), D strategists will have a field day with the Rs recent behavior.

Come on, Buchanan has lots to offer: she spent millions harassing Cyril Wecht on the off chance he had sent a few faxes at county expense, was awfully close to the center of the firings of nine US Attorneys who–unlike her–Karl Rove thought lacked enthusiasm for the Bush agenda, and she spent federal money harassing a few head shops.

Buchanan also is the Ashcroft disciple who made her mark by essentially entraping Tommy Chong and insisting upon a prison sentence which is almost never imposed for selling paraphernalia. She represents the worst of the right wing fundamentalist movement which was repudiated in last year’s election.

What’s the matter Drew? The Republicans did nothing? How about all the closed door really secret meetings at 3 AM? How about being totally shut out re: amendments to bills that will put our health care system on a par w/ 3d world countries? How about a level of debt (while Pelosi, Reid and their minions use personal jets at OUR expense)that is making the dollar crash, while Republicans try to stem the tide? How about the Republicans begging to regulate Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae in sub-prime mortgages, while Barney Frank says there isn’t any reason to look into the situation?
It’s real hard to get on the map when it’s hidden and you’re blocked from trying to get input. The Republicans ARE trying, but it isn’t easy in the face of a power-mad majorty. For that matter, how about those of us who pay their taxes, work real hard, and are still taxed above and beyond what we can afford – for health care and everything else? How about being an American? If you want socialist style European government, LEAVE.
