Snyder County commish mulling a run in PA-10
Snyder County Commissioner Malcolm Derk said Tuesday that he was considering a campaign for the Republican nomination in the 10th Congressional District, raising the possibility that an area elected official would take on sophomore Congressman Chris Carney (D-10).
Republicans this year have been unable to recruit a viable challenger against Carney, who is increasingly seen by political watchers as safe going into next year’s reelection. And while Derk would no doubt face an uphill battle in a district Democrats are determined to hold, the fact that he has held political office in the area would make him the most viable GOP candidate to emerge this cycle.
“It’s something I’m considering,” Derk said Tuesday in response to an inquiry from pa2010.com. “There are still some conversations I need to have, but I am thinking about it.”
Derk, who hopes to make a decision in early or mid-December, said he has consulted with Republicans at the local, state and national levels. First elected county commissioner in 2007, Derk, 27, was a local council member in the small borough of Freeburg for six years, including two years as council president.
The 10th District is massive, encompassing areas of more than a dozen counties in northeast Pennsylvania. And while Snyder County makes up only a small part of it, Derk said his base in the southwest tip of the district would make for a formidable start.
“The area is hungry for a candidate,” he said.
He acknowledged that, especially in such a large district, fundraising would be a key obstacle to surmount.
“The largest challenge for any candidate in a tough economic climate is raising funds,” he said.
And while Carney has mostly been largely seen as a centrist Democrat since first winning the seat in 2006, Derk said Carney’s votes for President Obama’s stimulus package and for the recent House health care legislation had troubled him.
“It really hurts to see more and more debt piled onto generations to come,” Derk said.
Carney topped Republican Chris Hackett by almost 13 points to win reelection last year. He had almost $400,000 in campaign cash on hand at the end of September, according to campaign finance data.

He looks like he’s running as part of a class project – for middle school.

He has a good record as commissioner. We need someone who will actually represent the district we live in. I’m not ruling him out.

I hope he runs. It would be nice to have a republican nominee who doesn’t hire illegals for 2010. A lot to ask, I know …

This is good news! I was afraid that Carney’s seat was, indeed, safe. I sure hope Derk has what it takes.

This guy is a joke. Carney is a Ph.D, veteran, father of 5. Derk looks like he’s on the high school chess team. We need a serious candidate, and he is not one.

Regardless of political affiliation, it’s usually not very professional to base candidate decisions on how someone looks – that’s not a very “serious” way to choose a candidate.

Anyone who is a County Commissioner should be taken seriously. To write him off because he doesn’t have a PHD or isn’t a father seems foolish to me. I’ve never met this guy, but I have heard of him- and from what I can gather he is pretty intelligent. He made the Harrisburg papers recently over his (and the other Snyder County Commissioners) decision on the boscov bailout. He made the right call.
Anywho, there are a number of Congressmen who are under 30. And I think this guy has just as much experience as they did when they ran for the office.

Pat,
Really? Those are the qualities you look for in a candidate? I’ve had horrible professors that had Ph.Ds, we just saw a veteran murder several American lives, and as for the father of 5…have you heard of balloon boy?
Maybe he was on the high school chess team! Was Carney?
If we’re going to talk about the candidates…lets talk about qualifications that MATTER. Unlike some, I look for candidates that seek truth, value transparency, small government, low taxes, and protect family values. Oh, and having integrity doesn’t hurt. Little do you know, Pat, that both of these MEN have been in office for just about the same amount of time! Who’s record shows these values better? I’m leaning towards Derk.

I hope someone can put up a good fight against Carney. This is good news that people are starting to take interest in the district! Oh, when it comes to looks it doesn’t matter. It’s all about the issues and this election will really bring out the best of them I believe.

The election is going to be about Obama and not about PH.D’s. Obama is falling fast in the polls and Carney should be easy pickings if Obama continues to drop.
I’m surprised more people havn’t shown an interest in this race.

Criticize me all you want for stating the obvious.
I’m not saying he’s a horrible person or should be ostracized for looking like a poindexter, but I have worked against Carney in previous elections and I know the voters in the district.
If any of you HONESTLY thinks this guy has a shot at knocking off Chris Carney, you’re incredibly naive or lying to yourself because you dislike Carney.

If you worked against Carney in previous elections, it means your team lost. Maybe you don’t know the voters in the 10th district as well as you think.
My view is that commissioners are very serious candidates- He already has a ready base of support (unlike businessmen), apparently has plenty of experience governing, and has controlled a multi- million dollar budget. I wouldn’t downplay those credentials just because he’s young.

“Criticize me all you want for stating the obvious.” Done.
There’s not much I can say to someone who is more concerned about finding a dad who served in the military, and has their PhD. Best of luck.
You’re the expert at losing…so find all the candidates you can!!!!

It’s not hard to guess what “Malcolm Derk, III” and his mom have been up to for the last few hours. Hi, “Ralph” and “Joker”!
Politics ain’t beanbag, folks. Expect a lot harsher criticism than mine if you’re going to take on an incumbent US Congressman & veteran who won reelection by double digits in a district easily carried by John McCain.
Also, ditch the glasses and do some cardio.

Quite frankly my vote would’ve defintely been for Carney, but after seeing what my party has done with the White House, I’m fed up. I’m not saying my vote will go to Derk – but I am saying that we need to take a look at some fresh, new perspectives. The change we voted for in 2008 just isn’t working. period.
As for age – more power to the young candidates – republican or democrat!

I’m so glad to hear Mr. Derk is considering a bid to challenge Carney. He’s the most serious candidate to emerge so far and has so much potential. It is very refreshing to see a young professional who is motivated enough to want to make a difference in government.

He’s a chess champion that I’d want leading this district. Last I knew, chess players actually are able to use strategies and carry them out. What happened to Carney’s thru-way plan?
CHECK MATE BY DERK!

I don’t think Chris Carney is the picture of fitness, either…Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I can’t really name too many politicos who are in shape…Maybe it’s better to bring on a little chub when running for office? A mindset of “No one trusts a skinny politician” perhaps?
Maybe Mr. Derk could stand to look a little older though; I don’t argue your point there.
I’m just excited that we might have a race! At least Derk has political experience and is willing to put himself out there; I don’t see any other people stepping up to give Carny and the people of the 10th district a race. I’m interested to hear more about Derk in the upcoming weeks…

Not only does he look like a middle schooler, he acts like one. Take it from one who knows. When he dosen’t get his way, his face gets bright red and he spind around on the floor pounding! Please do NOT consider him as a viable candidate!

Have any of you checked his campaign finance reports? Who paid for his election for commissioner? The campaign was funded by Barbara Hafer money.

I checked his reports. So what? Hafer did not single handedly fund the campaign. AND, he has not followed Hafer’s beliefs. Anyway, your comments seem pretty liberal online – don’t see why you’d be bothered!

Can anyone honestly vote for a kid who has never had a real job? He was never in the Armed Services, has no idea how the world works. He ignored real issues that faced Freeburg, when he was presiding over the boro council. He was pushed around by the boro workers. He is spineless, and needs to do something, and experience life before holding public office. It is my belief that before you could hold public office, you should spend 4 years in the Armed services, and none of the bs that Bush did. If you have never struggled, you cannot keep your thumb on the pulse of the little guy, and we need politicians that are for the little guy. We are rulled by the top 1%. If you don’t have money, no laws that will help or protect you will be passed. Only laws that get passed these days protect the wallets of the top 1%ers. We need to clean house, and start with this snot nosed, spineless, wimp of a person.
