Bart Stupak is wrong

by Doug Pike

I am writing today with a great sense of urgency. I was disappointed and saddened recently as I watched a coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats in the House of Representatives vote to restrict a woman’s right to choose.

The amendment by Democrat Bart Stupak seeks once again to block a woman’s access to medical care. In fact, a recent George Washington University study shows that eventually the Stupak language would restrict all insurance coverage of abortions—including coverage paid for entirely with private dollars.

This anti-choice amendment should not have been approved in the House, and it should not be included in the Senate version or in the final bill.

I’m running for Congress because we need more and better Democrats in Washington. This is particularly important in my race, because I am currently the only publicly pro-choice candidate,  Democrat or Republican, running to represent the people of Pennsylvania’s 6th District. This is incredibly alarming given current events that seek to chip away at a woman’s right to choose.

Today, I am asking for help.  Please take a moment to contact each of the other candidates in the 6th District race and encourage them to state their position on a woman’s right to choose and the Stupak Amendment that passed the House. Tell Manan Trivedi, Steven Welch, Curt Schroder, Ryan Costello and Howard Cohen to tell you where they stand.

Washington already has too many anti-choice and pro-Stupak voices. In this district right now, we have a choice. I’m in this race so that I can stand up for the values that you and I share. And when I get to Washington, my voice will be heard loud and clear—a woman has the right to choose.

The writer, a former editorial writer at The Philadelphia Inquirer, is a Democratic candidate for Congress in the 6th District.

This is great to hear. It is this kind of conviction that makes good candidate great legislators.

    Doug,

You’re writing with a “great sense of urgency”? Come on dude, the Stupak amendment went through weeks ago. It has taken you this long to find your bearings on this issue?

It will be in the conference committee. This issue isn’t dead.

Chesco Al – You must not be on Doug Pike’s email list cause he sent out a blast email about the Stupak amendment right after it happened. I suggest you join it.

And the issue is very much relevant as it begins to be debated in the Senate this week.

In fact Sen. Hatch is currently trying to attach an amendment to the Senate healthcare bill that is similar to the Stupak amendment.

    Doug-
Stupak was a few weeks ago. I can see you poking a stick at the GOP candidates on this.

However, I’m pretty sure that Manny Trivedi is already against Stupak (and that you probably already know that), so I don’t think he belongs in the same grouping as the GOP candidates. Guilt by association?

Besides, Doug, Manny was at the Onorata event last night with you. Why didn’t you just ask him his position on this issue when you were 10 feet away from him?

It’s so important that it took you since Nov 7th to craft a response? The STUDY that you reference was completed Nov 16th, so I can understand a delay until there was a study, but that was two weeks ago.

Seriously, why didn’t you just ask Trivedi his position last night?

Just curious has “manny” taken a public stand. And come on David are you new to politics?

Doug, thanks for standing up for choice! I’m sick of candidates who are too afraid to take a stand on this issue. We need more people like you in Congress!

Thanks for taking a clear stand, Doug.

Dave I check Manan’s website and there’s nothing on there about a woman’s right to choose.

Watch how fast people turn on this bill if Stupak is edited. Republicans and blue dogs alike will go nuts.

    Yoson and Danny-
I’m pretty sure this topic came up at the Trivedi event I attended a few weeks ago in the list of his positions and that Manny is pro-choice. Now, I don’t have a specific recollection of a discussion, because quite frankly, pro-choice Dem is like a dog-bites-man story and pro-life Dem is like a man-bites-dog story.

Again, if Doug had ANY doubts about Trivedi’s position, he could have asked him last night at the Onorata event.

Trying to associate (smear) Trivedi with the GOP candidates on this issue is crude, transparent, unworthy and disappointing.

I’ve seen both Pike and Trivedi at a few events now. I’m not sure how different their positions really are but so far Pike has on multiple occasions addressed the issue of women’s rights and the Stupak amendment and Trivedi has not.

I have a lot more respect for someone like Pike that is willing to address the tough issues of our time.

Who is to say manny trivediaz hasn’t spoken to señor pike before and pike is just trying to make him go public. If it’s such a basic issue he should state it. Just as there are issues pike needs to address before he could get my vote.

I am so glad to see a candidate coming out and taking a serious stand on a women’s right to choose. All to often candidates are too afraid to say anything and they simply walk the line between saying something and saying nothing. Doug Pike seems to be a different kind of candidate. Lets raise the level of debate in this election and actually call on our candidates to say something and to take a stand rather than fill our airwaves with 30 second sound bites of nothing.
