Another Republican steps aside for Fitzpatrick
Four days after Republican Mike Fitzpatrick said he’d try and retake the 8th District House seat he lost in 2006, a second GOP candidate in the race dropped out to support the former congressman.
Iraq War veteran Dean Malik made his announcement through Fitzpatrick’s campaign, which did not include a statement from him in a release on Wednesday. Republican Rob Mitchell withdrew from the race even before Fitzpatrick’s announcement last weekend and said he’d work to send the former congressman back to Washington.
Numerous Republicans remain in what is still a packed GOP primary to take on Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-8), but the latest withdrawal was another sign that Republican leaders are looking to give Fitzpatrick as clear a path to the nomination as possible.
“I am extremely grateful for Dean’s endorsement and look forward to working with him to take back our country, starting right here in the 8th Congressional District,” Fitzpatrick said in a statement. “Dean and I share a concern for the runaway growth in the federal government, our exploding national debt, and rising unemployment with no end in sight. We know that this course is unsustainable and that the 8th District deserves a representative more concerned with the needs of Pennsylvania families than photo opportunities and pleasing party leadership.”

You nailed that. The Republican leaders have anointed Fitzpatrick. He’s calling for an open primary but seems to be getting special consideration from the party bosses.
Seems like just talk to get tea party folks on board. Probably won’t work.

Mike Fitzpatrick has called for an open primary, exactly what the tea party people want. He has not been “anointed” despite appearances. He is going around to all the local GOP committees and speaking, just like the other candidates still in the race.
