Cohen drops out

Republican Howard Cohen withdrew from the 6th District congressional race Friday afternoon, clearing one more potential primary challenger out of incumbent Jim Gerlach’s way.

“I was running because I felt it was imperative that the Sixth District retain a Republican Congressman who believed in fiscal integrity, strong national security, and was committed to getting our citizens back to work,” Cohen said in a statement. “Jim Gerlach has the very best chance of doing that and I am enlisting in his reelection campaign. I am ready to assist in his reelection effort and do whatever I can to return him to Washington as my congressman. I have supported him before and proudly do so again.”

Lower Merion Township Commissioner Scott Zelov also withdrew from the race after Gerlach decided to abort his gubernatorial bid and run for reelection instead. Geologist Walt Hufford’s campaign has said he’ll stay in the primary for now, and while businessman Steven Welch and state Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester) have also signaled they may remain in the race, neither has said so explicitly.

It is unfortunate to see the candidate who would best represent the Sixth District’s concerns in Congress bow out of the race. Best of luck in the future to Secretary Cohen and his family…
