Kortz calls off underdog Senate bid
State Representative Bill Kortz (D-Allegheny) said Thursday that he was dropping out of the Democratic Senate primary, ending a campaign that had struggled to gain traction among fundraisers, pollsters and the media.
Kortz had always been a super-underdog, trying to garner attention in the high-profile contest between Arlen Specter and Joe Sestak. But he had worked hard, showing up at dozens of events and insisting he wouldn’t be counted out. As recently as last month, he said “we’re going to surprise some people.”
But on Thursday, he said he had been unable to raise the funds necessary to run a serious race. He did not endorse another candidate.
“The sad truth is, to be successful in this arena, one must be able to access the funds necessary to drive the message home,” Kortz said in a statement.
“I entered the contest last April because of the unacceptable economic meltdown our country has suffered,” he added. “I have worked diligently over the last 8 months traveling many thousands of miles, pressing the message that this economic debacle is the No. 1 issue and that those responsible must be held accountable. Millions of hard working Americans have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Thousands of businesses have been devastated because of irresponsible actions and outright greed by others. I worked very hard to drive this message across Pennsylvania.”
Following the withdrawal of former Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner, the primary is back to a two-person race between Specter and Sestak.

That’s a shame. I was looking forward to Kortz asking Sestak for 6 debates.
I got to meet Kortz at a few events. Though he’s a bit conservative for my tastes on some social issues, he’s a very nice and personable guy.

So Senator Specter is now running unopposed! After all, Representative Sestak has far more pressing concerns at present…

Time to come out of the closet. If you aren’t a Delco Dem, you’ve got no reason to fear Sestak.
I, on the other hand, as a Delco Dem have no fear of Sestak because I hold no elected office, nor plan to run for anything.

Don’t mean to tantalize, Mr. Diano. I’m afraid I can’t divulge anything at the moment. The facts will surface soon enough. But I will once again admonish future candidates to recruit professionals, and to avoid relying on family members.

Hater-
That’s a no-brainer. I’ve been saying for MONTHS that Sestak’s family-run campaign wasn’t scalable to a statewide campaign. They’ve done a good job on he relentless fundraising. But, they simply aren’t qualified for generating campaign strategy and running a statewide operation.
For that matter, neither is Joe. He’s shown himself to be incapable of understanding any strategy besides overwhelming force. I attribute that to the wrong lessons learned during his 31 years in a powerful military. He just is poor at comprehending asymmetric warfare, where he is on the side with limited resources. (Look at how much damage I’ve done to him without spending a penny.)
Anyway, you should really come clean on your identity at some point. For all the wild sh!t I say and predict about Sestak (and much has come to pass), I’ve got “some” credibility by having been on the inside, being friendly with area Dems and hearing their stories. For all we know, you could just be working for Toomey or Pat Meehan or are a former Weldon staffer or Delco GOP operative.
“Divulge” implies you’ve got some good stuff. What can you reveal without burning your sources? For a while, I had a source working for the campaign who complained how he/she felt Sestak cared more about what Delaware county could do for him, than what he could do for Delaware county. He/she also told me about how disorganized the office was and how one of Sestak’s siblings was micro-managing people to the point where stuff kept getting redone. Very inefficient operation. Not scalable to statewide.
If you’ve got a “prediction”, make it. The next poll. Sestak’s cash-on-hand. etc.

Your complete, total vindication is fast approaching, Mr. Diano.

My identity is no consequence, Mr. Diano. It is Representative Sestak’s quest for identity that is at issue here. His reputation was blackened by the Pentagon, and he has been bound and determined to restore it ever since. This obssession – and not the well-being of the common man – is what drives this scarred man. Public service, to him, is immaterial; ego gratification is his principal aim. Those who pose a threat to this ongoing quest for identity, in his deluded mind, must be crushed. But he has discovered to his dismay that some people cannot be crushed, and that an individual’s past actions can truly come back to haunt him/her. Representative Sestak’s demand for six debates can best be viewed as a defiant act by an increasingly unhinged man.

Hater-
Your background or basis at least, if not your identity, is of consequence to gauge your credibility.
Are you friends/relatives with someone working for the Sestak campaign? (in another thread you reported an inside “quote”)
Are you a GOP operative?
Are you current/former government employee (military included)?
Had you met/encountered Sestak BEFORE 2006?
I can understand how blowing up his own career, losing his 3rd star, and blaming it on everybody else could haunt and drive him.
However, I feel the “past actions” haunting his campaign are how he’s treated local Dems and staffers since he got elected.
But your identity, and thus motivation, are relevant. I’ve gotten all sorts of crap about my attacks on Sestak, but I’ve been clear about what I learned from my own experiences, from friends who continue to interact with his campaign, and from newspaper accounts.
Here’s a “research” question for you: Sestak boasts about how he served on the NSC under Clinton and he first day he met Clinton.
Sestak NEVER discusses why he left that job to go back to the fleet. Do you know why?
