Meehan says ‘political gamesmanship’ beneath him (Updated)
Former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan’s campaign signaled late Thursday that it wasn’t necessary for him to offer up an opinion on a controversial dual officeholder within the 7th District he’s seeking to represent, declining again to directly answer his Democratic opponent’s call to do so.
“As a candidate for federal office Pat Meehan is not going to take part in the partisan opportunism being engaged in by the Republican and Democrat[ic] parties,” Meehan spokesman Pete Peterson said in a statement, alluding to the fight over state Representative Mario Civera’s (R-Delaware) decision to retain his Harrisburg job while also serving on Delaware County Council.
“In previous statements,” Peterson added, “Bryan Lentz said it is time to put political partisanship and naked self-interest aside, but that is exactly what Lentz is doing by engaging in such political gamesmanship.”
When Lentz first called upon Meehan to join him in demanding Civera’s resignation from the state House earlier on Thursday, Meehan’s campaign sought to put the focus back on Lentz, pointing out that he missed a large number of votes last year and saying he “should start showing up for work.”
Lentz’s campaign did not comment on the voting attendance issues, but previous news reports have pointed out that many of his missed votes could be attributed to the death of his infant son last year.
UPDATE: In a follow-up statement, Meehan’s campaign objected to any implication that it is criticizing Lentz for missed votes relating to his son’s death. It also provided a narrower, more detailed accounting of votes Lentz missed to underscore the point. Its accounting of Lentz’s whereabouts during the missed votes could not be independently verified this week. The full statement from Meehan campaign manager Bryan Kendro is below.
“The Meehan campaign will continue to question legislator Bryan Lentz’s decision to miss critical votes in Harrisburg while campaigning for a new job. Our campaign will not criticize Bryan Lentz for missing any votes due to the loss of his son last year.”
September 16 – 19 missed votes, met that day with AFL-CIO to secure campaign endorsement
Lentz missed 3 votes on December 16th attended campaign event in Center City Philadelphia
December 15th , missed 9 votes (including key table games vote), reportedly in Washington, DC meeting with party leaders/insiders

Shame on Pat Meehan. Looks like this second non-answer to a pretty straight forward question is due to the fact that the first mean spirited, thoughtless reply failed to take into account a personal tragedy suffered by his opponant.
It makes me sick. I don’t know how any of these guys sleep at night.
Stand up Meehan. Answer the question and leave silly, ill-advised responses at the door.

Let’s be clear: Pat has not said ANYTHING on this or any other issue. He is an empty suit who continues to hide behind his campaign staff and dodge the question. I doubt we will ever get a straight answer from Meehan on anything.

I’m confused. How is this an issue related to Congress? And why should we forsake partisanship and political silliness before but not now? Is this guy just another “do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do” Democrat? If there is anything we can learn from President Obama, its to avoid the politics of personal destruction. Non-issue.

Take a look at pennsylvaniavotes.org. Lentz missed well over 300 votes last year, some of which can probably be attributed to his personal tragedy. But 71 votes came after he filed a statement of candidacy with the FEC in August, which is when he began hiring campaign staff, raising money for his campaign, announcing endorsements, etc. If he has recovered enough from his personal tragedy to engage in campaign activites, he should be able to show-up for work at his taxpayer funded job.

An ant’s belly is not “beneath” Pat Meehan.

Pat Meehan worked for Karl Rove at the disgraced Bush Justice Department where he was complicit in the justification of TORTURE and warrentless surveillance on innocent American citizens. The notion that anything is “beneath” him is simply laughable.

Karl Rove was in charge of Justice? Well, I guess you learn something every day.

karlub-
“Working for Karl Rove” means doing his political bidding, not directly working for him. I guess you learned something else new today.
Don’t forget, Rove was in charge of selecting the Justice Dept political firings and the subsequent cover up.

As with most blogs, this conversation has denigrated into worthless conversation having nothing to do with the qualifications of our representatives/candidates. Looking back to the 2006 election I remember a residency theme in both the PA Senate race and PA-7 Congressional race.
In the Senate race much was made about Rick Santorum living and sending his kids to school in Va. As a result, Senator Casey’s family lives in NE Pennsylvania while he serves in DC. Is this so he avoids the same criticism heaped on Santorum? It appears that why.
In the Congressional race, Weldon questioned Sestak’s residency, which was countered by explaining his daughter’s medical treatment. Sestak further explained if/when he won he would move to the district. He never did. Now it appears a parallel is being drawn using by exploiting the Lantz family tragedy, (neither campaign is doing this, only the bloggers).
In both instances, much time and ink was spent on issues that have nothing to do how we are represented in DC. Pat Meehan’s position on Civera is irrelevant, Lentz’s position on DeWeese is irrelevant, and answering these question tells us nothing of their position on Healthcare, the economy, terrorism, etc. These are the issues that actually impact our lives.

Meehan’s position on an elected official playing games to cause an expensive special election is irrelevant??? I guess if you don’t care about the taxpayers, and put politics over policy, then you’ve described Meehan and the Delco GOP pretty well.
Terrorism’s biggest impact is to our wallets. More people die from traffic accidents than terrorists. The GOP likes to ramp up the fear of terrorism (helping the terrorist achieve their goals), and ignores problems that affect more lives. The “war on terror” is crippling the economy because Bush and his GOP lackeys refused to raise taxes on the top 1% to pay for it.
Healthcare is a problem because the GOP is siding with the insurance industry over the population and putting political obstructionism over the nation’s welfare.
All reasons why a party tool like Meehan shouldn’t be in any government job that doesn’t involve emptying waste paper baskets.

Unfortunately for Delco Dems, Representative Sestak (or rather, his woefully incompetent sisters) have all but assured a Meehan victory in 2010. Meehan soon will be able to campaign as the law and order candidate, stressing that the current occupant of the 7th District seat is a disgraced lawbreaker. Sestak has all but doomed the Democratic Party in the 7th District.

You really need to back up how/where you think Sestak has broken the law.
