MontCo GOP chair backs Gerlach’s reelection bid
The chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Committee publicly voiced his support for Congressman Jim Gerlach’s (R-6) reelection bid Monday, and urged his fellow committee members to join him in backing the incumbent.
In a statement, county GOP leader Bob Kerns said Gerlach “has a tremendous record in Washington as a fiscal conservative fighting for taxpayers and families.”
“The Republican Party, and residents of the 6th Congressional District, are fortunate that he has decided to run for re-election to Congress,” Kerns said.
The statement by Kerns came as local party organizations prepare to vote on endorsements in the coming weeks, and as wealthy entrepreneur Steven Welch increasingly signals that he might stay in the race against Gerlach, who shook up the political landscape in the suburban Philadelphia district when he abandoned a gubernatorial campaign to seek reelection instead.
“I personally support Gerlach in his re-election campaign, as many leaders throughout the 6th Congressional District do,” Kerns sad. “I am urging my committee, as they endorse by areas, to do the same.”

Anyone who can still believe that the Republican party is the party of fiscal conservatism is just not paying attention. Cutting taxes while spending a trillion bucks on wars of choice is not my idea of fiscal conservatism. And, if you want to go back to Saint Ronny, spending the Social Security trust fund probably didn’t help either.

No surprise a RINO is backing a RINO. If Gerlach is a fiscal conservative than why did he vote yes for HR1424 and usher in a huge bailout? I don’t think the man has laid eyes on the Constitution. Certainly not Article one Section eight or the tenth amendment.
Maybe I just don’t understand how easy it is to spend other people’s money.

I am very skeptical that JIm Gerlach is a fiscal conservative, at least how I would define that term. During the Bush years he was a champion for the Medicare Modernization Act which created Medicare Part D, the prescription drug benefit of 2003. That legislation was not paid for–it came from deficit spending. He is a big proponent of Medicare Advantage which costs 14% more per beneficiary than traditional Medicare. Admittedly, he supported all of Bush’s tax cuts (does this make him a fiscal conservative?)–but they weren’t paid for either. Maybe it would be more appropriate to call him “deficit” Jim Gerlach. He never opposes Republican spending, although he challenges Democratic spending which is ironic, considering the Democrats attempt to pay their spending since pay-as-you-go rules were reintroduced. Considering that a huge portion of his re-election funds come from special interests like the pharmaceutical industry which earn big dollars by exploiting inefficiencies in the medical system at the taxpayer’s expense, he has a lot of chutzpah to suggest he is some sort of fiscal conservative, serving as a sentinel of the federal treasury.
