Purple in Pennsylvania

The last refuge of a news anchor

Last Fall I wrote a jocular post concerning, among others, Dawn Stensland, in which I suggested that her tabloid history might not be the best preparation for a run against Pat Meehan in 7th Congressional District. Stensland’s shadow campaign has predictably gone nowhere, and her husband Larry Mendte has now chimed in with a blog post—picked up by The Inquirer, no less—in which he suggests that sexism, on my part and others, might be part of the reason.

I’m grateful for any recognition from The Inquirer, which is more than I got when I ran for Congress in 2008. And to the extent that my attempt at humor misfired—that I appeared to be judging women by a different, personal standard than I would apply to male candidates—I do regret the remark.

But let me be clear about this: joking aside, the reason to object to Stensland’s candidacy (or non-candidacy) has nothing to do with her gender or her husband’s flirtations. It has to do with the fact that she has said and done absolutely nothing to qualify her as a serious candidate for office.

She doesn’t live in the district, has no political history, and the one substantive comment I’ve located by her—a suggestion that the Pennsylvania Society shouldn’t meet in New York—was irrelevant and childish. Other than that, she’s a superb candidate.

Samuel Johnson is supposed to have said that patriotism was the last refuge of a scoundrel. I think accusations of racism and sexism are becoming the last refuge of failed politicians. If Ms. Stensland wants to run for office, let her declare her candidacy, explain her positions, and take the fire like anyone else. Having her husband, of all people, defend her gender is not going to convince anybody.

I for one would love to see Dawn make a run.
She is smart, and will know how to work the media to get her message out.
I am tired of the Republican machine anointing a candidate and scaring everybody else away.

The reason our government no longer functions is because of too many insiders. The fact that Stensland has “no political history” is a factor that is working for her, rather than against her. I, for one, would rather vote for someone who hasn’t made a career out of kissing the rings of the party bosses to get their blessings for a run at a seat. Government for the people, by the people: what a concept.

That being said, I do agree the time for coyness is over; she should either declare her candidacy or not. The longer she wavers, the weaker she looks.

Ok, so you may have something with too many insiders, but he is right. She can’t just stay on the fringe forever. All the other candidates have websites where people can become informed on their positions and even if they feel so inclined donate money. As he has said Dawn has done NONE of this. And let’s have an honest conversation, it certainly helps to have some political experience before a run for a US Congressional seat.

    Robin Whood,

I don’t disagree that by Stensland staying on the fringe she is not helping her cause in running for the Seat.

I do disagree that political “experience” should be a prerequisite. What kind of “experience” is necessary? Kissing up to the right power brokers? Knowing the right lobbyists? Being an effective fund raiser? What do any of these things have to do with good government?

The founding fathers never intended government service to be a career, even if that is what it has evolved into. The people gain nothing in perpetuating this principle.

First – your comments were not jocular – they were mean and sexist. You remind me of people at a party who tell a racist joke and then say “get a sense of humor” when no one laughs.

Second – How do you know her candidacy is going nowhere? She would make a VERY strong Independent candidate and the public has an appetite for that. So maybe she is just holding her powder.

Third – She is more qualified than most who are seeking public office. The idea that you must have held some low level political position, be a political appointee or a lawyer to run for office is rdiculous. She has been involved in the community for the past decade – more involved than Pat Meehan.

Finally – unless she is running in the primary – she doesn’t have to say where she stands on any issues. Pay Meehan hasn’t – he’s waiting to take the proper polls.

Mike, you should give up this blog. It is obvious why your Congressional candidacy went no where. You are WAY out of touch.

    Mike,

How much political experience did you have when you ran for Congress? And more importantly, were you able to keep your spouse / partner interested in you during your campaign?
