ChesCo Dems endorse Trivedi

WEST CHESTER—The Chester County Democratic Committee endorsed Manan Trivedi for Congress on Saturday, giving the Reading physician an important organizational boost as he seeks to overcome a significantly better-funded opponent.

At the county party’s nominating convention here, Trivedi won 99 votes, well over the 77 needed for a formal endorsement and more than double the 40 votes garnered by former Inquirer editorial writer Doug Pike. Lower Merion Township Commissioner Brian Gordon, who only entered the race late last year, received only one vote.

“I’m honored to get every endorsement,” Trivedi said after the vote. “Chester County is a critical part of this district.”

Trivedi still faces a difficult path forward, with Pike sporting a $1-million advantage thanks to money he’s put into his own campaign. But with many insiders expecting a closer vote, the final margin represented a resounding show of support for Trivedi. Before the vote, Pike’s campaign was circulating a list of 56 committee members who it said had committed to Pike, but ended up 14 votes short of even that total.

Pike, who undoubtedly has less at stake in the county endorsements because of his financial advantage, credited Trivedi’s support from leading “establishment” Democrats.

“We’re the only campaign with the resources to win the general election,” he said.

Montgomery County Democrats will meet to vote on their endorsement next month. Democrats in Berks County typically refrain from making formal endorsements, and despite that being his base, Trivedi said that his campaign won’t be pushing for the local party to take a vote.

“We respect their bylaws,” he said. “I’m confident I have very strong support in Berks.”

State Senator Andrew Dinniman (D-Chester), one of Trivedi’s most fervent supporters, said the margin of victory was important.

“Those 99 people have made a commitment not just to vote for him, but to help him in the campaign,” he said.

The county party also endorsed state Representative Bryan Lentz (D-Delaware) for Congress in the 7th District. Lentz cruised, winning 39 votes, compared to only two for environmental lawyer Gail Conner and one for political consultant E. Teresa Touey.

Pike is essentially saying, “Vote for me because of my trust fund.”

I know this is just politics, but I abhor Pike…although his campaign manager is a bigger dick than he is.

If you look at the list (still growing) of Berks County Democratic Committee members who have endorsed Trivedi, its fairly apparent that he has the defacto endorsement up here as well.

It is also fairly apparent that Trivedi has the support of those who truly matter least. The Committee People who have all endorsed and make up Trivedi’s endorsement resume are of County committees. Possibly the least organized and least devoted individuals. The CP’s that vote are the last one’s to canvass with an average age of 80 and are not the super vols. Maggie unfortunately it is about money when you need to beat an incumbent that has millions. I think we would all love a candidate to win that has a “good story” and $100,000 but welcome to 2010 sweetheart. The failure for the Berks Dems to even have quorum is a sign of another failed attempt at county politics. Like it or not the election comes down to the voters, those who could care less about a county endorsement and those that aren’t even paying attention for another two months. Trivedi has failed to open a field office, will not be able to run media and is running on his charisma. And unfortunately when contacting the real voter (not the 140 CP’s) they won’t be reading PA2010 or probably a newspaper containing campaign news. They will be sitting in front of tv’s and answering their doors. However, they won’t see Trivedi, with a lack of full time staff and a lack of the money needed to beat an incumbent with millions it is going to take millions. Joe Schmo will never care or even know who Pike’s campaign manager is and probably doesn’t really give a s#!&. If your a true Democrat if you want what’s best for your party and not yourself, if you want to win seats you need to support the candidate that is going to win. So please get off your high horse of insider politics and realize that the thousands that vote don’t really care about your opinion either. And please note I don’t live in the sixth and I don’t really care who wins as long as the Democrats do!

I think it would be wise for Dems to learn from mistakes of the past. Martha Coakley was rich, but totally uninspiring, entitled…I see alot of similarities between Doug Pike and Martha Coakley. Dems should learn because someone is boring and rich and entitled, they are not entitled to win a congressional seat. Voters won’t vote for Pike in the general despite his coffers.

the 6th is screwed for D’s. Their going to throw it away on Trivedi who is a traitor and who Gerlach will call out for his roots in the general and freak out all the fired up GOP’ers. Call it what you will Pike can ACTUALLY push Gerlach….but everything thinks this fat doctor can do something. Oh brother. And somehow Pike is getting his assed kicked. Great. Have another 2 years Jim.

Congratulations to Mr. Trivedi on the Chester County endorsement! Born and raised in Berks, a Doctor, AND an Iraq war veteran who served on the front lines saving lives? Sounds quite compelling. From some of the Pa2010 articles and posts I’ve read, I don’t know much about Pike other than he has some money.

Instead of telling us what Mr. Pike has to offer, I primarily see low-level responses trying to bring down Trivedi. Do Pike supporters actually have anything to share about his record or ideas? What’s Mr. Pike’s plan if he makes it to Congress? Will he bring ideas and solutions, or will he send his bank account to debate issues? Until I see something of substance from Mr. Pike, my vote will stay with Mr. Trivedi.

So just a quick recap on what has just taken place in the 6th district: Trivedi get’s the endorsement from probably the most crucial county of all in the 6th district. The reasoning: according to the Chester Co. dems. website….”mostly his compelling story” and his healthcare stance” If you look at Pike’s website and Trivedi’s they state the exact same thing, but I guess manny T has been giving different answers to people personally. Very odd. Next up Wlech dropped out. The only guy who was going to push Gerlach on the R side, with his hundreds of thousands on hand he would have drained Gerlach. So now, Pike who is the only one left with the money for Gerlach has lost his establishment support because of his lack of “story”.

Great, Gerlach gets 2 more years. What a sad sights for dems.

Chris on the other hand what does Trivedi’s compelling story do for us in Congress? What has he brought to the table besides making vo-tech kids weatherproof HighSchools?

It sad to see the Pike campaign run on the idea they are the strongest candidate for the general election. Voters never like candidates who act like that and it won’t resonate well with the left. It’s too bad really, you know that campaign won’t walk back from that talking point and on March 11th when Montco back Trivedi it will essentially be over for Pike.

  15. Montco

    Feb 21st, 2010

no, Pike will not lose Montco endorsement.

Excellent speech, Dr. Trivedi, and good luck for the nomination. Let us Dems learn the lesson Scott Brown and Martha Coakley taught us, and go for the hard-working, charismatic, educated, thoughtful candidate rather than the wealthy boring candidate with nothing else on his resume.
