A big win for Trivedi in MontCo
PLYMOUTH MEETING—Congressional hopeful Manan Trivedi won the endorsement of Montgomery County Democrats Thursday night, capping a furious run in which Trivedi has gone from relatively late entrant into the race to the favorite of the party’s rank-and-file throughout the 6th District.
Trivedi, a Reading physician and Iraq War veteran, overwhelmingly beat out former Inquirer editorial writer Doug Pike for the endorsement, winning 77 votes to Pike’s 28. It was an even larger margin of victory than Trivedi’s win in Chester County last month. And for the first time, it had Trivedi talking like a front-runner in the May primary.
“We just have to be unified and go on to beat Jim Gerlach,” Trivedi said.
Six months ago, Pike was the lone candidate in the race, with Democrats in Washington hyping his ability to self-fund a campaign and insiders up and down the party hierarchy lining up behind him. And while Pike’s $1-million advantage—born entirely of his own contributions to the campaign—remains a major factor in the race, Trivedi can now claim to be the party’s preferred candidate. Pike’s campaign argument seems to increasingly hinge on the money in his war chest.
“Let’s not have an underfunded candidate going against a slime-ball like Jim Gerlach,” Pike said.
Only a couple months ago, Montgomery County was seen as Pike’s strongest base of support, but Trivedi quickly made inroads, thanks in part to the support of prominent former state Senator Connie Williams. It remains to be seen if Trivedi’s fundraising will pick up now that he has been endorsed by the local parties in both Montgomery and Chester counties. Berks County doesn’t formally endorse, but Trivedi is seen as having solid support in what is essentially his base.
After the vote, Trivedi said he can close the fundraising gap by courting contributions from military veterans, health care providers and Indian-Americans (there are currently no Indian-Americans in Congress).
“We’re raising money at a very strong clip,” he said.
The local party also endorsed state Representative Bryan Lentz (D-Delaware) in the 7th Congressional District over environmental lawyer Gail Conner.

Lower Merion Dem/Racist-
Manan won because Pike lacks a personality that “connects”. This year, there seems to be a rejection of self-funding rich guys. Besides Pike, you have Welch and Knox.
Onorato’s $10 million in the bank is an asset and a problem. It’s great that he as the money to fight the GOP, but he came by it so quickly that he appears to be bought and paid for already by the usual suspects in PA’s big money corrupt politics.

Since an endorsement vote was taken for the PA-6th Congressional District> [A big win for Trivedi in MontCo|pa2010.com], does that now mean that those Montco Democratic Committee persons who are now supporting, and/or who may be supporting Doug Pike by Primary Election Day, must take a Leave of Absence on Primary Election Day??? With this vote the MontCo Dems are now split, not only at the County level, but especially at the Area level. And, as was alluded to by Bruce Bailey in his comments at> [MontCo Dems forgo Senate endorsement|pa2010.com], the County Committee may have lost a percentage of its manpower and a rift may be created in the County Party.

@icare…: The way I heard things last night, that’s exactly what it means. If a committee member is working for Pike or actively supporting him anywhere in the Montgomery County 6th District, they must take a leave of absence until after the Primary. Same with the Governor’s race: anyone who is working for or supporting Onorato or any candidate besides Hoeffel cannot serve as a committee person during the primary. Anything different from that violates county bylaws.

2 county sample ballots will only have the name of Manan Trivedi. For all non political junkie types this is the button they will push.
As far as Berks, Trivedi being a resident will keep that competitive.
Pike MUST drop out. He was roundly rejected by his party. Gerlach can be beaten. The ball is in Pike’s court.
Dem in the 6th
Mar 12th, 2010
I agree with Esther Grant with that Pike must drop out. The Montco and Chesco Dems both overwhelming support Trivedi. Berks traditionally does not endorse, but with the local Berks endorsements Manan has gotten and with the other two counties supporting him, I imagine Berks would endorse him with an ever higher percentage than Montco just did. Even if Pike wins in May, the question becomes, “will the party now rally behind him?” Pike says he has the resources to win in November, but what is needed to win are votes and so far, Pike can’t win large party votes, how does he expect to get more votes in the election.

If Lower Merion were “where the votes are”, Gerlach would have lost all his elections. LM is the piece of the district that doesn’t resemble any of the rest of it. We’ll finally win when we nominate a candidate that appeals to Reading/Pottstown/Phoenixville/Downingtonw/Coatesville/Norristown/Kutztown instead of always trying candidates that LM loves.
Oh, and don’t shed a tear for Doug. He can pay people to stand at the polls for him.
David Diano

Lower Merion belongs in Delaware county.
How is Doug “shocked and blindsided”??
Regardless of the draconian rule about restrictions on committee people: Doug was overwhelmingly rejected for the endorsement. It wasn’t close.
Doug knew there was going to be an endorsement vote. Manan kicked his ass in Chester and now in Montco. If he’s not “prepared” to fight for the critical sample ballot endorsement, then why is he running?

I think the Pike campaign is banking on huge advertising effort. And I don’t think it’s going to be hard for them to get people out handing out items with his name on it at the poll. Chester Young dems. just endorsed they’ll get people out there doing it and whoever else they can pay. It’s going to come down to who has the strongest finish. Also, don’t forget all the labor support Pike has. THESE next 2 months will be interesting.

Some of the past blog posts from Pike supporters seem to suggest that all the people voting for Trivedi are delusional and part of some dysfunctional establishment led by evil people.
Even if you take that as fact, based on Trivedi’s overwhelming margins of victory in the counties (99-40 and 77-28), Pike needs to convert large numbers of delusional Trivedi supporters to win anything and that is not likely if his followers are labeling Trivedi supporters as “foaming at the mouth.”
Conversely for Trivedi supporters (yes, I am one) – the message is very straightforward – Manan Trivedi is a winner.
So long as that continues, people will rally around him – some of those people may have even once been Pike supporters – and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Mar 13th, 2010
Beware of the some of these prior postings it’s easy for members of Doug Pike’s staff to write anything they want and pretend they are just an “average” voter – note Lower Merion Democrat and Lower Merion Racist posts – so obviously a staffer or consultant wrote these posts – this is one of the oldest tricks in the political book – so, readers beware. Also, those writers kept misspelling Manan’s name, spelling it Manyan, classic plant to appear as though you are a regular person writing this, but it’s most likely a consultant or Pike’s press people who will do stuff like this, think about it, they want to try to generate negative comments to cast doubt for readers.
On another note, Doug Pike lived in Philadelphia for his career as an editorial writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, he only moved to Lower Merion when he announced that he was running for the 6th congressional district – in my book, that is a “carpet bagger.”
Also, regarding a prior post – someone thought the press would be bias toward Pike, I’m not so sure about that point. Maybe the Philadelphia Inquirer, but remember management has completely changed since Pike worked there. I think other media and the newest game-changers, the internet and bloggers, have no allegiance to Pike.
Hopefully reality will set in for Pike and his consultants that despite his personal money, real people, real voters are finding finding him flat and rather bitter. He spoke the other evening at the Montgomery County Democratic endorsement event as though he was the winner already – then, minutes later when he lost big, I would hope he realized that he is not connecting. On a small note, but actually rather big-hearted, when Dr. Manan Trivedi got up to speak (after Doug Pike) he thanked the chair of the Montco party, and said thank you, Doug. In my book, that is a gentlemen, thank you Dr. Trivdei. This was after Doug (without saying Trivedi’s name, just implying it) tried to make the point that he would win in November against Gerlach because he had up already raised more money than Trivedi. Then came the vote, 77 for Trivedi and 28 for Pike. Well, in my book, the people spoke, not money.
Hopefully, smart voters in May will see the truth and vote for the better candidate not just the one with more money.

Some people came late and didn’t registered. However, if you heard Marcel, he also pointed out that the difference in the extra people was smaller than the difference between the two votes.
That means that if you assume the worst case that every extra person voted for the resolution, and took all those votes away, the resolution STILL passed.
So, not a sham or fraud. And, knowing how aggressive the Sestak fans are, there is ample reason to suspect them of “extra” voting (like turning in two ballots).

I suggest everyone ignore the comments from the individual (Stuffed Ballot Box, Democracy, and Lower Merion Democrat) who specializes in long run-on sentences with random capital letters. They are linked to the Senate campaign of Joe Vod Varka. They seem to be written with the intent to stir the pot, perhaps in desire to support some other agenda besides the Pike and Trivedi campaigns.
Also, in terms of full disclosure, I’m the same person who has also posted as ednarT and letraM .K. I don’t have any other posts besides these three. (I thought that it was obvious that it’s the same person, but I should have used the same name so as not be associated with behavior attributed to Drew, Pike’s campaign manager).
I’ve come to the conclusion that contributing to these blogs is somehow shaping a story that there is deep infighting in the party. I think blogs like PA2010 and PAPolitics may inadvertently be perpetuating that story.
Based on the vote counts and the fact that they have been pretty much in line with the type of counts the county parties have had before (see the 2006 county vote results), there is very little substance besides the blog comments.
There is some tough campaigning, but nothing to the extent that implies the winner would be unable to unify the party by the time of the general election – unless you really believe the person behind the long run-on sentences and some of the posts planted by Republican posers.

I met Trivedi briefly a few weeks ago and he seems like a really nice guy. He’s got a great story and he’s exactly the kind of guy you want to root for. Unfortunately, his understanding of policy seems to be very basic at best. He seems marginally charismatic when telling his life story or mocking the Republicans, but when asked for his opinions on an issue like health care, he stumbles, doesn’t make a lot of sense, and shows no understanding beyond the most basic DailyKos/Firedoglake talking points. I haven’t met Pike, but Trivedi just doesn’t have enough there to beat a strong candidate like Gerlach. Even on the off chance he did, I don’t think he’d be a very good congressman. It’s a shame, since he seems like a really good and decent guy and I hope he sees much success in whatever else he tries to do.

Interesting that Pike states he’s raised 1 million dollars, but reality is (check the FEC filings if you don’t believe it) over $900,000 of the money is actually his money. So, I agree with “interesting” that Pike wants to buy the election. Yes, he did raise over $300,000 (that’s nice) but he also got in the race back in the Spring when no one else was running so he had more time to make phone calls.

I read over “Steve’s” remarks and thought they were strange when he said, “I met Trivedi, Unfortunately, his understanding of policy seems to be very basic at best.” That’s funny reading over Trivedi’s bio on his website indicates just the opposite: Trivedi was a healthcare advisor to the Obama campaign, he has a masters degree in public policy from UCLA, he was a health advisor to the Navy Surgeon General and he is currently a primary care physician. That all seems far from basic – seems rather impressive actually.
Also, that same person, “Steve” calls Trivedi marginally charismatic when telling his life story or mocking the Republicans. This point is laughable because actually when Doug Pike tells his life story it’s a story with hardly any personal details except when he talks about when he wrote editorials that went along with the Bartlett and Steele stories from years ago, titled, “What went wrong.” Pike then goes on to harp on the Republicans about “what went wrong” (get the connection) And saying the Republicans are the party of no. So, actually Steve is sort of accusing the wrong person of mocking the Repuplicans, it’s actually Pike, not Trivedi. I watched on youtube Pike giving this exact speech to the Chester County Democrats (watch it and you’ll see what I am saying) Pike does talk about his brother who had cancer (sorry for that) and relates the story to those who may have no health care, etc, his brother fortunately did have insurance and is apparently doing well. I also watched on youtube Trivedi give an early speech to the Berks County Democrats (it’s a little grainy, but worth watching) he never “mocks” Republicans and actually he seems very bright and knowledgeable about subjects including healthcare.

Primaries are decided overwhelmingly by habitual voters. The ’slates’ that people hand out; you think these voters follow them? That only happens when voters don’t know anything about the candidates. Winning the county committee’s endorsement is a positive, for sure. But don’t imagine that it has much of an effect at the polls. In general, people are skeptical of endorsements coming from political parties. Newspaper endorsements mean very little, for the same reason.
Good Point
Mar 15th, 2010
Good point Doug Kahn, but if the habitual voter comes to the poll without knowledge of the candidates (especially in a primary) they are looking to see what their party says, exception in a general election because then the uninformed voter is just voting Democrat if they are a registered D, or vice versa, vote Republican if they are a registerd R, just keeping their party line going.
But in primaries you have a choice of probably two people (in this case, Pike and Trivedi) who are pretty darn similiar on the issues, in fact, from what I’ve heard they really haven’t discussed the issues between them too much. So, what is the voter to do…well, the voter (if they are the habitual voter as you call it) does some research prior to voting or they just look at ads and then it comes down to who do you like better, or another way of saying it, who would you like to have a beer (or, in my case a chardonnay) with? Sof ar, the voters in the 6th district have two Democrats with strikingly different stories and demeanors. So, that is the choice so far.
