Critz was bookkeeper for company with multiple tax violations (Updated)
Democrat Mark Critz was the business manager and bookkeeper for a now-defunct concrete company that accumulated at least five federal and state tax liens during his tenure there, according to documents obtained by pa2010.com.
Critz is seeking to succeed his longtime boss, the late Congressman John Murtha (D-12). He is considered the front-runner to win his party’s nomination for a special election to finish out Murtha’s term when Democratic insiders meet Saturday in Delmont to make a recommendation, before the state party’s executive committee makes a final decision next week.
The latest disclosures relate to Parkins Inc., a Johnstown-based company that did work for the state Department of Transportation as late as 2003. In a deposition given for a worker’s compensation lawsuit in early 2000, Critz testified that he worked part-time as both the company’s bookkeeper and business manager from at least late 1997 until early 2000. During that time, the company racked up more than $13,000 worth of state tax violations, and at least one federal tax lien of more than $127,000, according to public records.
It remains unclear how long before and after this period Critz kept the books for Parkins, but numerous other tax judgments were delivered against the company, including another $27,000 federal tax lien on Jan. 13, just 10 days after he gave the deposition while still with the company.
Critz did not return several calls seeking comment Thursday. By e-mail, he asked for the documents at issue, but didn’t offer comment after they were provided.
His leading opponent, former state treasurer and auditor general Barbara Hafer, called his past business associations into question Wednesday, while also criticizing the process by which he may very well be selected as the party’s candidate for the May special election. Led by Murtha’s widow Joyce, much of the local party leadership has lined up behind Critz. Mark Pasquerilla, a wealthy Republican who had been a Murtha loyalist, described Critz as “the best legacy candidate.” With little time left before party delegates make their recommendation, it remains to be seen if and how the disclosures will effect the outcome. News of the tax liens, as well as records of other lawsuits against Parkins, was first reported by The Pennsylvania Progressive.
Critz’s stint with Parkins overlapped with his early years working for Murtha. Holding outside employment in a private company is not by itself a violation of House ethics rules. Pasquerilla and Critz told The P0st-Gazette that Critz joined Parkins, owned at the time by one of his in-laws, to help revive the struggling company. It eventually went out of business in a deluge of lawsuits.
“I took a job with Parkins because I wanted to try and help a struggling local business turn around its operations so that it could bring jobs and economic development to our community,” Critz told the newspaper.
UPDATE: In an e-mail message Friday afternoon, Critz reiterated the statement he gave to The Post-Gazette. “I worked for Parkins because I wanted to try and help a struggling local business turn around its operations so that it could bring jobs to our community,” he said. “I left the job because I disagreed with decisions that were being made by the owner over the company’s future, but only after I worked hard to try and turn the company around.”

Brett,
Simon and GARFUNKEL didn’t do Mr. Tambourine Man.
It was written by Bob Dylan and recorded by both him and The Byrds. : )
Nice analogy, though!

Didn’t Critz say that he was asked to intervene to save the company and actually resigned over the owner’s business practices? Maybe READING the article (Pittsburgh Post Gazette/March 4) would help. Seems like someone is turning into a big crybaby because she is losing. Sooooo NOT the type of behavior I would want from MY representative.
If she even is still a candidate in a month, what is she gonna do when the Republicans start on her with her the venomous way she runs all her campaigns (is running ALL she does?); the debacle with trying to strongarm her daughter into a race; switching parties just to win elections, etc. Would she gonna run around like some angry moaning nut in congress? Scary that would be the image of Western PA that everyone would see.

Critz is the true Murtha legacy candidate. Is it really important that he worked for his failed Brother-in-laws company when he wasn’t a shareholder? Why can’t we talk about the huge role he played in asisting Jack Murtha create jobs in our district? He is the candidate who understands our district and its needs. He has the right motivation for running.

Not being a shareholder does not make it ok for someone to be at a company for several years as a corporate officer, (business manager and book keeper)… and to basically engage in state and federal tax fraud.
A little corporate law 101 for you:
A shareholder is an investor in a company
A corporate officer is one of the folks responsible for the day to day operations of the company, and hence weighs in on decisions such as whether or not to pay their taxes. Mark was the corporate secretary, which is a corporate officer.
I will let him off the hook… only provided he was in a coma.
The argument: “I was the business manager and book keeper for several years… and it didnt occur to me to pay ANY taxes to anyone” is an argument im not even sure you could get someone hopped up on crack to believe. Its obvious what the US Government and State of Pennsylvania thinks of that.
dude?

Apparently the Feds and the State do NOT consider it “TAX FRAUD!!!!!” or else they would have charged someone criminally.

If Mr. Critz had ANY decency, then he would simply drop out of the race. But we all know that no politician has any decency, they are simply consumed with themselves and NOT the people they are supposed to work for, in this case residents of the 12th congressional district of Pa. ENOUGH ALREADY, drop out of the race.

b/t… tax season’s coming up. Tell Critz to get to H&R Block. Tell him to take that campaign money he got and pay all the back taxes they owe in judgments and liens.
Sad part is some of those were to “taxpayer funded” PennDot. How pathetic. He should resign immediately.

Now will be a real test for both the the State Party. State Exec Committee and the exec Committee.
I am sure that after what we have seen that they will shy away from ethics problems as each part has learned a hard lesson
If they really want the people’s trust in this dark hour, they must go with Barbara Hafer who stand tall above Critz.

Time for new people. Critz should not be elected precisely because he was an operative for John Murtha for so long. Murtha was a living embodiment of the old style that is so wrong for the country. Yes, he was good for his district, but so was Huey Long. Earmarks like Murtha championed are bad for the country. We don’t need another old-style hack who follows in those footsteps.
Hafer also is a wrong choice. Just another career politician.
We need fresh ideas, fresh faces, people who are in tune with the future. And preferably someone who will be elected, do a great job for a few terms, and then voluntarily leave.

Critz has too much dirty baggage to be a contender against the Republican Noise Machine…if the things said about him are not true, they will convince people it is just by repeating it over and over and it will become fact to them and there goes the 12th…and a prominent Republican endorses him…that is convenient…Hafer will give this office a fresh perspective…

@B–Really B? Critz is not a career politician. He is a career federal staffer. He worked as the district director for Mr. Murtha. He was Murtha’s “guy on the ground” back home while Jack was in DC. Critz has WORKED tirelessly FOR THE PEOPLE of the 12th for years! He knows the people of the 12th AND he knows the players in Washington. In short–No orientation period, he’ll know what to do and who to talk to when he gets there to get things done on our behalf. Now Hafer and Cernic on the other hand, now they ARE career politicians who are only in it for themselves. Cernic is just power hungry and Hafer running a negative campaign already) at 66 years of age is probably just grooming her daughter to take over when she retires should she win the seat (but she won’t.) And Hafer is already all sour grapes because of the “backroom” vote that 12th District Democratic leaders cast in Critz’ favor. Don’t give us the babe of the woods routine Babs. Thats politics–thats how it works–you should know. What do you think will happen in DC? If our elected Democratic leaders in the 12th don’t want you then take the memo and bow out. I put money on it that come election day the voters of the Fightin’ 12th agree with me and our ELECTED Democratic leadership and vote for MARK CRITZ FOR CONGRESS!
