High-level Dem: ‘Incredibly unlikely’ Critz gets nominated

Mark Critz may have the support of local Democrats in his bid for the 12th Congressional District. But the final decision on who carries the banner in the May special election rests with the state party’s executive committee. And one high-level Democrat says the electability issues that have been raised about John Murtha’s former district director are serious.

Serious enough, perhaps, to deny him the nomination when the executive committee votes Monday.

Calling it “very unlikely, incredibly unlikely” that Critz will win Monday, the party insider signaled that the stakes are too high for a candidate who hasn’t been vetted over any remotely long period of time.

“The things is,” he said, “this is going to be a national election, it’s going to be turned into a bellwether, it’s going to be exhaustively analyzed.

“This is very fluid and nothing has been decided,” he added in an interview just 24 hours before the executive committee is set to make its pick.

It’s clear that Critz is more popular locally than he is elsewhere; state committee members voting Saturday in the straw-vote in Delmont mostly split their votes between him and Barbara Hafer, making it so that the delegates appointed by local county chairs effectively handed Critz the win, albeit a non-binding one.

But that such a high-level party hand would make the comment underscores how much some of the attacks on Critz have stuck. It has been disclosed that a company he helped run had multiple federal and state tax violations. An opponent has tried, though without offering evidence, to paint him as ethically suspect. And the liberal blog The Pennsylvania Progressive has led an almost daily charge against him as unelectable, seizing on conflicting statements and his decision thus far to forgo substantively addressing the questions raised about him.

In an interview Sunday, Critz acknowledged that fair questions had been brought up. And he said they would all be answered, soon.

“I can win this election,” he said. “Certainly, some issues have been brought up that I have to address. But I’m on such a short timeline that there are things I have to  do before addressing them at length. But I guarantee you they will be addressed shortly.”

At the same time, in stressing that he’s not an experienced politician, Critz seemed to give voice to the concern that he’s not seasoned enough for a special election that will surely be examined under a bright national spotlight.

“I don’t remember every little detail,” he said. “This is a new world for me where I have to be so precise in everything I say. I’m not used to.

“Believe me,” he added, “the issues that have been brought up are easily explained, but I don’t want to get into a situation where I give a wrong date, and two months down the road I’m getting hammered.”

They would be wise not to select Critz, but I look forward to seeing if they are gullible enough to nominate Hafer. However, nominating Hafer would fit well with Specter, making the Democratic party a party led by Republican has-beens who find the Democratic party a convenient place to further their personal “all about me” agendas. I had no idea that this was what was meant by “Change we can believe in!”

Hafer Wins Rob, no doubt about it

IF the don’t pick Critz, they have cost us the election. We will be viewed as a party that can be strong-armed by insiders, a party that doesn’t listen to the people of the district (who chose critz 2 to 1 over the next closest candidate), and a party that is floundering.

If they pick either a non-candidate Cernic (with plenty of his own skeletons nobody bothers to look for becuase he has no chance) or a person who like Hafer (my spell check picks “HATER” when I type that!)who may SWITCH THE SEAT TO REPUBLICAN (cause she has shown her penchant for that..twice) then the the state party will just look like complete fools.

It is stupid to even care if Philadelphia doesn’t know enough about Critz, the don’t LIVE there, they don’t VOTE there, they don’t understand the people in the 12th AREN’T Philadelphia, they aren’t Pittsburgh. they are a completely different Demographic that is CONSERVATIVE, like Criz, NOT Hafer. And Cernic?…no way. Not strong at all…just a poor candidate.

If they don’t pick Critz, they deserve the loss they will certainly face in November without him and his ties to labor, party people, and the average guy.

They are stupid for trying to hurt their best candidate and to even discuss candidates with ones who can’t get the votes THERE in the 12th, where it counts.

Awesome Rob, Republican “has-beens”! ha ha!

Really, Hafer said the people want “change” I think the people do NOT mean not candidate who changes themselves!! ha ha!!

Critz is their only strong chance. Since Mrs. Murtha with him, not a question in my mind he will kill in the 12th.

    Marylou-

Lying and tax evasion are serious charges and the democrats would be insane to go with critz.

What more evidence does hafer need… this guy lied to the paper

I think he just worked for the guy…easily explained. All hafer did with her attack on Critz is open the door for Cernic. No one wants her. We don’t even need to talk about her anymore.

Cernic is a loser. The end. He got one…ONE entire vote outside the people in his office that picked him in his own county.

I don’t get this “vetted” term…to me it is just a better word than political whore…that’s what those 2 (hafer and cernic) are.

The Republicans know better than to pick a candidate like that, why don’t we?

    Mary Lou-

Ed Cernic is not a loser. Both he and hafer have less baggage that critz. Critz openly lied to reporters yesterday, okay and if that doesnt say something about the mans character…

    http://thepennsylvaniaprogressive.com/diary/2268/mark-critz-caught-lying

Best to go w name recognition and ability to crack down on wall street corruption. Hafer fits the bill, critz does not. If they pick critz… he will get bludgeoned to death in the special with his past and people will say… wow that was stupid to pick this guy.

    Unnamed sources? Really??

Marylou–fine, let’s go with Critz. You can bring the marshmallows when we go down in flames. I DO live in the 12th. Critz is toast. I don’t know that Hafer is the answer, and I agree with you on Cernic.

We have to do some serious reflecting here. The process was completely flawed. No candidate was vetted. This is a disaster.

But you can’t blame Hafer for Critz’s problems. They are HIS doing and the Rs would have bludgeoned him worse.

Time we choose special election candidates in a primary rather than through an appointment process.

Sorry, I just don’t get it at all. With the climate of the country why would anyone think Critz could win ? Maybe the folks voting for him were just not looking at the big picture at all. Critz was nothing but a flash back to the powerful days of Congressman Murtha. I guess they all asleep when Brown won the Kennedy seat in MA. In case they were’t paying attention, MA is a deep
blue state ! The 12th has a far way to go before they will win a seat with Critz. Only with Barbara Hafer will they even stand a chance. Now is the time for real Politics and I don’t think they are up to it. Hafer has won Statewide before and stands a very good chance in the 12th.
Critz would be destroyed at the polls as he is unknown and has far too much baggage. Just what were the people thinking when they through away their vote ?

Critz is Murtha “light” and that is just not acceptable, Murtha, rest in peace,it is time to go with a new face (and woman) Hafer go to Washington! All Aboard!

  12. Brett

    Mar 8th, 2010

Critz ia Murtha “light” and Hafer brings a new face to the race.

They dont want her in there because she is going to bust some crooks bigtime. Thats what we need someone thats going to clean out the cesspool of corruption.

The district is more conservative than Hafer. She is pro-choice the district trends pro-life, she is for gun control, the district trends second amendment. Critz has those credentials already. He also knows all the township supervisors, county commissioners, state rep’s etc….he already has worked with them. They will be extremely helpful in a 70 day race. Both republican’s are amatures in politics too. Russell showed that last time, Burn’s hasn’t run either. So, there will be all kind of things coming up.

  15. [...] It seemed likely after the local Democrats tabbed him over the weekend (despite an interesting rumor that his candidacy was in trouble), but this afternoon, it was made official: former Murtha staffer [...]

You need to find a new “high-level source.” Feeling foolish this morning?
